1. Issues getting the update installed fails at 12% and rolls back

            If the patch fails to install, get the log files located at %windir%\Logs\CBS\*.* and  %windir%\Logs\DISM\*.*,  and  C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log zip them up and send them to me.

Run the following DISM command from an elevated command prompt and see if the patch will install after you run the DISM command

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

NOTE this may not fix this.  It is still being investigated at this time.

    Run Scan Windows system components:

   Click start, find the command icon and right mouse click and run as administrator

    sfc /scannow

    Next Remove KB2919355 package by running the following command on the x64 platform (change this to x86 for 32bit platform.  Again do this from an command icon where you have right mouse click and run as administrator

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    Clean up the WinSxS folder before attempting a reinstall.  (Again needs an elevated command prompt)

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

    Clean up disk with system files remove: (Again needs an elevated command prompt)

    cleanmgr.exe

    Restart computer

    Run offline installer from the location you installed from before in the following order:   These KB's must be installed in the following order: KB2919442, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018.  KB2919442 is a prerequisite for Windows 8.1 Update and should be installed before attempting to install KB2919355 

2. Someone moves folders and it failed to install

3.On Server 2012 R2 interaction with Veeam software

5.  If you installed from MSDN download you will see a small KB2919355 being offered up. 

This is expected as it appears that KB2934018 (one of the sub patches that gets installed as you install KB2919355) is replacing KB2949621 that was manually installed in the MSDN package.  This appears to be a bitlocker update that in the MSDN release was not installing unless bitlocker role was installed.  This is expected, go ahead and install the offered KB2919355.

As stated in the KB "The MSDN and VLSC updated ISOs do not contain the complete set of fixes
that are offered from Windows Update. Therefore, Windows Update and WSUS
will offer the KB2919355 update again to computers that are deployed by
using the images in these ISOs. This is expected and does not result in
the full reinstallation of the Windows 8.1 Update but only one smaller
component of it. The rest of the update will not be downloaded or
reinstalled."

The following actions fixed it for me:

Try going to: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools"

If this folder does not exist (because you changed a few folders around to make the start screen look better for example)

You just go to: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

and add a new folder "System Tools"

The update installed flawlessly after that.

A genius of another board suggested me to backup and afterwards delete the following reg-key:

After that i made a restart and then installed the update without problems!!

Update was installed via MS Update, not previously downloaded, therefore i would suggest that there is no problem with corruption of the files provided by MS Update

it is available in the MU catalog (as mentioned in the WSUS blog post), so, you *should* be able to import it into your WSUS/SUP:

Tried installing Windows Update KB2919355 (see details below) using Control Panel. After downloading and completing stage 1 of the install, then stage 2 to 30%, and restart stage 3 to 100%, received error 800F0922 message that Windows could not install the update; and then Windows rolled back the changes. I found discussions online than many others had been unsucessful as well.

I then checked in command-line mode and the folder was there, dated today; but may have existed before anyway, since it's some type of special folder.

Then I ran the the Dism command.

There is also another issue appearing, where certain 2012R2 machines cannot boot after installing KB2919355. The error INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE comes up after the blue Windows logo and the circle of dots. It may only be a SuperMicro issue (that's still a lot of motherboards potentially affected!), or possible an LSI issue, but worth bringing to people's attention. See the thread here:

Quick note on #12, really, really, REALLY, Export the reg key before deleting it. Otherwise your setup and forwarded event logs are borked. Also, I am still getting 0x800f0922 after deleting this.

Thank you for the above. Not being the most literate pc user, I managed to do as far as the end of number 1.

Unfortunately after that it is WAY above my head.

Can you help me further please. It's the furthest I have got in trying to download KB2919355. I have the download saved  and it installed, but when I tried to restart after that I got the usual   "Failure configering  windows updates etc"

I have also tried to install it from "Windows update" with the same results.

If you are going to suggest a refresh or a return to factory settings, may I ask please ?

I am running windows 8.1. My problem is: I can't remember if I made the recovery disc with 8 or 8.1. If I do a refresh and it asks for the recovery, will I do damage if I insert 8 instead of 8.1 or vice versa ?

We received the update throuqh WSUS. It installs just fine but after a reboot the start button no longer functions. I removed the update and it is now accessible.

Thank you for your reply. I understand about backing up my files before doing a recovery, I don't have a lot anyway I have already done two system restores hoping that would solve my problem and I have a 'big' exterior hard drive.

My original and important question is: If I do a recovery or restore to factory settings will it look for my recovery flash drive. I can't remember if I made the recovery when I was running 8 or 8.1, will it make a difference to the recovery/factory settings ?

I am not really in any hurry. I am hoping MS will sort out the problem they are responsible for and I won't have to do anything.

After installing KB2919355, I am not able to check for Microsoft Updates Online via Proxy-Servers (standard http/https proxies. e.g. squid). I get the error Code 80072F8F. Uninstalling KB2919355 makes it work again.

Also moving the server to another OU that has no Windows Update Group Policy Settings applied (and then rebooting it), makes the problem disappear. Very Strange!

Reboot is necessary. gpupdate /force seems not enough...

Can I coin an acronym?    BlkSOD.

Black Screen of Death.  That's all I'm getting now.  (Black screen showing flashing mouse cursor instead of logon screen when I reboot after Kb2919355.)  The same happens in Safemode.  (Tried 4 times, re-imaging in between. Tried waiting 30 mins.)

In addition, all of my 14 partitions are getting marked as dirty each time I try to boot into Win8.1 update 1. (Multiboot system with Win7.)  Fastboot and hibernate were turned off before the update.  I double checked.

• Tried all steps above except uninstalling .Net, and the DISM/Scan sfc tricks (Don't sound like my symptoms.)
• Tried with latest Nvidia and Intel Sata/chipset drivers.  Also tried with older ones (with an old backup image.) Same BlkSOD.
• Tried a new profile and turning on UAC. (I normally use the Administrator profile. -- Um, save your breath. I love security holes!)
  
• Tried changing to a default Windows theme, and uninstalling theme patch before the update.

• I run with 130% dpi, 1366x768.  I wonder if that could cause it?
• I may try accessing the event log offline to see if I can get some error info.

 

Other than this, a fresh install is the only thing I can think of.  That's just too much work, (without Easy Transfer (grrrrr!)) Third-party apps give me all the benefits of Kb2919355 from what I can see.  It doesn't seem worth the trouble.

I have the exact same issue, fwiw I can even create a folder System_Tools but if I try to rename it without the underscore I get the Windows System folder merge option instead.

I have admin rights as there is only one login account on this machine.

On second thought, whereas I'm clearly no coder or software developer, but if the main hang-up here is a missing folder ... why oh why does the patch not simply create said folder and carry on like most any other software installations?

I'm sure there's no shortage of people as frustrated as I am with this "required" update that can't install itself but allegedly will handcuff those of us unable to get it to work.

In item 1, the section starting with the text, "This is starting to be the trending solution for dealing with failure 80073712:", is what worked for me.

I spent many hours, maybe up to 15, trying fixes that were similar in content but not as detailed or inclusive as this one.  Although it took a couple of hours to run through the sequence completely, it was the first set of instructions that worked for me. I was pulling out what little hair I have left. Thanks for the info and the fix.

Ok, so after trying most of the suggested fixes on here with no success, I ended up reinstalling the OS using the MSDN ISO that includes the update. All went well, and it installed it without losing any of my files or programs. 

However, as I'm sure some of you have read, the MSDN ISO did not include KB2934018, which is part of the KB2919355 update that is offered through Windows Update.

And of course, this update has errors as well. It shows as KB2919355 in Windows Update, but I can also install the offline KB2934018 as well. However, both of these methods give me an 800F0922 error.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to solve this error and get the last 126 megabyte part of this update installed? My PC already has the main KB2919355 update installed from the MSDN ISO, but not the part that wasn't included in the ISO.

After trying everything else I could think of and was mentioned in the various posts, I uninstalled AVG 2013 network edition and that was the last thing that let the update proceed. Disabling it was not enough. I also had the Cisco VPN client version mentioned so it may have been some of the other items that I had already tried that contributed to success, but AVG was the l

Update: I got it working by using a really old image backup.  It makes me think it might have been group policy permissions because the constant prompts for admin elevation are back.  I am still using the hidden Administrator profile without problems though.  I will restore my group policies and see if I have further update problems.

FYI: I did have AVG free installed.  Now I don't.  Maybe.......?

The other thing that has changed is that my partitions are still getting marked as dirty every time I boot into anything but Win8.1.  Fast boot and hibernate are turned off.  I still have hybrid sleep on but that didn't cause a problem in my last install (before Update 1.)  Don't know what's going on.

1. Issues getting the update installed fails at 12% and rolls back

            If the patch fails to install, get the log files located at %windir%\Logs\CBS\*.* and  %windir%\Logs\DISM\*.*,  and  C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log zip them up and send them to me.

Run the following DISM command from an elevated command prompt and see if the patch will install after you run the DISM command

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

NOTE this may not fix this.  It is still being investigated at this time.

    Clean up the WinSxS folder before attempting a reinstall.  (Again needs an elevated command prompt)

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

    Clean up disk with system files remove: (Again needs an elevated command prompt)

    cleanmgr.exe

    Restart computer

    Run offline installer from the location you installed from before in the following order:   These KB's must be installed in the following order: KB2919442, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018.  KB2919442 is a prerequisite for Windows 8.1 Update and should be installed before attempting to install KB2919355 

2. Someone moves folders and it failed to install

5.  If you installed from MSDN download you will see a small KB2919355 being offered up. 

This is expected as it appears that KB2934018 (one of the sub patches that gets installed as you install KB2919355) is replacing KB2949621 that was manually installed in the MSDN package.  This appears to be a bitlocker update that in the MSDN release was not installing unless bitlocker role was installed.  This is expected, go ahead and install the offered KB2919355.

As stated in the KB "The MSDN and VLSC updated ISOs do not contain the complete set of fixes
that are offered from Windows Update. Therefore, Windows Update and WSUS
will offer the KB2919355 update again to computers that are deployed by
using the images in these ISOs. This is expected and does not result in
the full reinstallation of the Windows 8.1 Update but only one smaller
component of it. The rest of the update will not be downloaded or

If this folder does not exist (because you changed a few folders around to make the start screen look better for example)

and add a new folder "System Tools"

A genius of another board suggested me to backup and afterwards delete the following reg-key:

After that i made a restart and then installed the update without problems!!

Update was installed via MS Update, not previously downloaded, therefore i would suggest that there is no problem with corruption of the files provided by MS Update

Thank you for youre great effort to help out in this frum!

In my case it is like #5

I use Bitlocker and all goes until this second part of the 355 file is offered (126M)

When I try to update that:

1) It seems to install ok, asking for reboot

2) It then goes trough the usual boot down installs ("please don't.... installing xx%"

3) Same when starting up "wait.... xx%" until 100% ok

4) Then, system stops to start up normally and enters a loop of  "Something has not gone ok. Will try to automatic repair"

5) this happens 2 times.    Automatic repair fails and ask to reboot.  Then, at 3rd time,  Pc startup locks on the Bitlocker asking for the big recovery key.  After feeding that key, system boots directly to special startup tems. There, I can go to Advanced options and boot from a good restore point.

Have done this already 3 times. Each time with more tems disabled or uninstalled. AV disabled.

I give up. Don't know what to try anymore!

After many days of failures and getting various errors, this is how I finally installed KB2919355 :

1. Make sure KB2919442 is already installed.

2. Download offline installers Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu (690.8 MB) from: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

We'll be using it later on.

3. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and create a new folder and rename it "System Tools". It may disappear after you rename it. That's alright.

4. Now Download and Run Fix Windows Update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/

5. Open Command Prompt with Administrative Rights. Execute the following commands one after another:

sfc /scannow

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe (Select the drive where your OS resides after being prompted, then when given the options of files to be deleted, select all files)

6. Restart your computer.

7. Now run the KB2919355 offline installer which we had downloaded in step 2.

8. It will show the message "Installation is Complete", then click "Restart Now"

9. Windows will work on updates till 30%, restarts and completes the rest of the working.

We had 4 systems where this update failed.  1 out of 6 Windows 8.1 and 3 out of 6 Server 2012 R2 systems.

The steps under issue 1 worked for us. 

One of servers was a test Remote Desktop Server and we had deleted the System tools folder as mentioned in Issue 10, however recreating the folder did not resolve the issue. Running SFC /SCANNOW then running the update worked for us.

Found this blog post the other day about SCCM and KB2919355.  We increased the maximum runtime for the update in the hopes that it may resolve any future issues.

Prefer not to wipe the computer. If I have to wipe, would it be possible to install Windows 8.1 Update 1 from an ISO image and apply a Windows 8 upgrade key?

Finally! This worked for me - removed the Cisco VPN Client and it installed.

Now what...? Should I reinstall the client, you think?

By the way, it's all very well saying "it's very important to test quickly and deploy this" but Microsoft have seriously dropped the ball on testing for this update...

This is really frustrating. I have had update problems in the past on other machines too - Microsoft needs to make these updates smoother.  Spent two hours with Microsoft mucking with my system today with no progress.

I am rolling back at 99% and getting error 0x800F0922 in the logs.

My computer is working relatively well, and some suggestions here sound pretty extreme - before I risk bricking my system can anyone give me some risk assessment of the following two techniques that sound most promising to me?

1. My system reserved partition is 350mb but has only 27mb free because of a large winre.wim file.  Can I move that file off that drive without doing anything fancy (ok, maybe creating a simple mlink?) and then put it back after the update?  Is there an easy way to recreate my winre.wim file?  Isn't 300mb a bit big for this file?

2. Regarding the bizarre technique of deleting the massive registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT , is this ok to do? what is meant by the warning restore the registry key before a cold boot? The registry doesn't care about cold vs. warm reboots to my knowledge.  Doesn't it reload at any standard reset? Why would this key need to be put back before a cold boot?

Furthermore... I don't have a Systems Tools folder in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and adding it was strangely impossible.  I could name a new folder anything but system tools, when I named it that it would just evaporate.

After downloading and completing stage 1 of the install, then stage 2 to 30%, and restart stage 3 to 100%, received error 800F0922 message that Windows could not install the update; and then Windows rolled back the changes. I found discussions online than many others had been unsucessful as well.

I tried (as noted below) two suggestions that I found in this discussion. The first was to create a System Tools folder. Well, I did this in File Explorer and it vanished. A second time after changing the New Folder name to System Tools it vanished as well. I then checked in command-line mode and the folder was there, dated today; but may have existed before anyway, since it's some type of special folder.

Then I ran the the Dism command.

Then I shutdown and booted. I tried installing the update again, this time using the Modern Interface. The download was even quicker than before. Stages 1 and 2 and 3 completed and then the lock screen appeared. Yeah! Success.

So I tried all of this for my 800F0922 error, and now I am getting a whole new error 0x8024200D.  Windows 8 has become a bigger disaster than Vista.

running 3.1.5160 - uninstalling this did not work for me. Older versions are problematic though.   Good luck getting the newer version - Cisco won't give it you - Only your IT department can get it and they probably won't.

Quick note on #12, really, really, REALLY, Export the reg key before deleting it. Otherwise your setup and forwarded event logs are borked. Also, I am still getting 0x800f0922 after deleting this.

Me too. =(  Any other leads for this error?  Spoke w Tech support. They have no idea.

I had to re-format all of my machines to get this update to work. Sounds like from your previous comments your an end user. If your having serious troubles getting the update to install and this is your personal device you should look into backing up your data and re-formatting your pc. There is of course, no guarantee that this will solve the issue.

After months of trying to resolve this  we came up with a proven winner to get this installed.  For our installations, our SonicWall VPN may have been the reason the install would fail.

1.  If you have a VPN installed, copy down all your domains and logins and UNINSTALL the VPN.

2. Delete any corrupted instance of KB2919355 (this is using the 64 bit package) with an elevated command prompt using: 

DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

3. Clean up with an elevated command prompt using:

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

4. Download the Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu and the clearcompressionflag.exe files. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335 (again this is 64bit)

5. Run clearcompressionflag.exe.  Takes about 1 second and gives you no indication that it completed successfully, but thats ok.

6. Run Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

7. Restart Windows

8. Bask in the glory of a successful install.

My solution was similar to #15. Except in my case was an older SonicWall VPN client. I tried most of the other suggestions before I uninstalled the VPN, and Windows Update worked just fine after that.

I've updated my SonicWall VPN client now to the latest, so hopefully it won't be such a pain. Hope this helps someone else.

Sadly, even after installing KB2919355 on 2014-MAR-18, the issue still persists on Windows 8.1 Home.
