KB2718704 causes limited functionality after install and reboot
Microsoft Server 2008 R0 SP2 x64 Enterprise Edition. I have had trouble with Update for Microsoft Windows KB2718704 - AKA - Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB2718704). I install and reboot my server and I have limited functionality afterwards. Services fail to start, the MMC opens, but Services fails to load to allow me to start, stop, etc. services. I can not go to Programs and Features to uninstall the update. Internet Explorer 9 fails to start, it starts in Task Manager, but fails to "load" on the screen and Ctrl-Tab will not bring it up. There is a Red X in the system Tray on my network connection. When I try to shut down, start, shut down or start, restart, it "hangs" on Shutting down Group Policy Client service..." I do not have any group policies, that I am aware of, this is a simple server that is hosting my SharePoint 2010 Foundations Internet site (nothing major). What information should I provide for you, logs, etc. to try to figure this out? Going to safe mode and uninstall this update 'resolves' the issue, and I can get into all other applications, etc.

Has the update readiness tool been run without error? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool?SignedIn=1 Then check the %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file for errors. Hello, I'd create a full server backup and try to install this update again. This time, Id run System Update Readiness tool first, make sure no error is found in CheckSUR.log. Then, download the update and install it manually. Download KB2718704 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2718704 If it still causes problems, please open a ticket with Microsoft support so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the below link: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/ Thanks Zhang
