Joining a domain / IPv6 Configuration.
Hi Everyone,
I've recently installed a fresh copy of Server 2008 for testing - primarily i'll be testing IIS7 configurations.
I'm in no way a server master - but i generally have no problems setting up a 2003 domain and getting my machines to join and interact with it. However - I'm having problems with my Vista machine joining my new 2008 domain.
My windows XP machine joins the domain fine, however - my Vista machine comes up with an error message of not being able to find the path.
In any case, I have a sneaky suspicion that IPv6 is my problem, and that's where my knowledge ends. Would someone be able to provide me with perhaps the default setup for IPv6 in a local environment? I use 192.168.0.1 as my current server's v4 IP.
Oh - I can ping my server - and name resolution appears to be working from the command prompt!
Any help would be mucho appreciated!

HelloCadriel,
At first let me ask you a question; why using IPv6 while IPv4 is easier?
If your answer is because widows vista can't join the domain.
Lets try to troubleshoot your problem; your problem seemsthat your windows vista computer cannot reach yourdomain controller. So, try to re-configure your DNS settings (enter the IP Address of your DNS server), then register your DNS server using ipconfig /registerdns command-line. Finally, try to join your domain again.

Hi Sherif,
Answer to your first question - because I thought ipv6 was a mandatory protocol now with the Vista / 2008 server combination? So - my initial thoughts were to leave it enabled. I also saw some posts indicating that it's quite hard to remove it?
Secondly - i've checked my servers DNS, it appears to be okay. I can ping by server name - and that works fine. I've also registered DNS using the command you mention above more than once.
The exact error i recieve upon trying to register the domain is "The network path was not found.".
Interestingly - if i go through the "join a domain" wizard, it appears to detect the domain i'm trying to connect to, and even know if i've typed an incorrect password for the user who has rights to join the domain - however, on the final step - I recieve said error message.

Just as an update - I've done another fresh, full install of 2008 RC0 once again, and this time setup the IPv6 address as static on the server, along with setting up the stateless DHCP.
Once again - the Windows XP box can join the domain without issue, and the Vista box can not. I've even tried disabling IPv6 completely on the Vista box (via the documented registry change) to no avail.
So - with the above said, i'm not convinced that it was ipv6 causing the problem anyway.
Any other thoughts?
