Joining Domain Issues
I'm trying to join a windows xp in to a new domain and got this error message: Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain csca.com: The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.ach.local Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS. - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone: Csca.com local . Hello, as I see you have got a DNS problem. Please proceed like that: Make sure that each DC/DNS server points to itself as primary DNS server and to other internal DNS servers as secondary ones Make sure that each DC without DNS points to internal DNS servers Restart netlogon service on each DCs or reboot them one by one Make sure that your client computer points to an internal DNS server as primary one If the problem persists, it should be a connectivity problem. Yes I have done your steps above and verified it to be correct on both domains. However still getting the same issue. No firewalls in between as they are all turned off. Thoughts?

What does "both domains" mean? Has this machine been joined to a domain before? Was it ever removed? Make sure that the XP machine is in a workgroup, not a domain. Make sure that its DNS address is the IP of the DC in the domain you want to join. Do an nslookup of the domain name. If this fails, check your network config. Bill

For "both domains" that's basically source domain and the target domain. The xp machine is in Workgroup. The IPs are not static as this is a regular xp client workstation so theyre dhcp. NSlookups are solving the new domain. Cheers.

Temp solution. go to the client machine add your PDC ip address. into c:\windows\systems32\drivers\etc\host open host using notepad and edit the PDC ip address below 127.0.0.1 e.g contoso 192.168.xxx.xx save the host file. Also check on firewall side.. if your ip address is allowed to communicate with your PDC ? same subnet ? and try to join domain again :) hope it works..Guowen Su | CCNA, CCIP, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP, CEH | http://www.microsoft.com/en/sg/default.aspx Our Goal? Hi DBertine, Thanks for posting here. Will this issue also occur on other clients that want to join this domain where in same subnet ? Please post the “ipconfig /all” result from this problematic client computer here. Meanwhile, you should also check if AD integrated zone is running properly by performing “dcdiag /test:DNS” on all domain controllers and post the results here for further investigation. Hi DBertine, Thanks for posting here. In addition ,are all domain controllers multihomed ? what’s OS running? According the error ID, this issue could also be caused by the flowing reasons: • Client computer is not configured to use a local DNS server. • NetBIOS over TCP (NetBT) is disabled on client computer, and you are using the NetBT domain name when you try to add the computer. • A third-party firewall program that is installed on the computer is blocking DNS queries.
