Issue with Windows Update - Preparing to install...
I'm preparing many Win2008R2 servers for a terminal server farm. As usual as soon as the servers are up and running, I run Windows Update on all of them, but they seem to not be updating, cause there stuck on the message - Preparing to install... I've gone thru the logs and I don't seem to find anything related. The servers have no changes made, just install, reboot and join the domain, in a OU with no Policy's applied, reboot and then run WU. This is very annoying and time consuming to even figure out why this is happening. Thanks for any help!!!Team is a group in which members work together intensively to achieve a common goal.

Please run the Checksur utility that corresponds to your version of OS from the below link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 Then, paste the contsnts of following logs here: %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log Also run "sfc /scannow" from an elevated prompt and paste the outcome here This will help to understand why this is happening. Hi, We will need to make sure that which update is currently in installing. Please test to "Check for updates" and also "View update history" in Windows Update to see if we can find some clues. If we find out the certain update, we can download it from Microsoft website to manually install it so that we can get related errors.Shaon Shan |TechNet Subscriber Support in forum |If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Hi Shaon, Individual updates are installing ok, but a machine just installed has many many updates to perform. No interesting events concering the successfull updates. I just don't understand why the WU does not go beyond "Preparing for updates...". I'm gonna post an answer to mr. thestriver with a portion of the CBS.log. Hi thestriver, Its been dificult to come here, but I've managed... Here part of the output from the CBS.log that looked relevant... "2011-01-07 16:41:53, Info CBS Session: 30125705_3386162356 initialized by client RMT. 2011-01-07 16:41:53, Info CBS Session: 30125705_3386162356 finalized. Reboot required: no [HRESULT = 0x00000000 - S_OK]" Whilst I got this info, WU was running with the usual "Preparing to install..", and its been like that for about 20mins. I'll post the SFC result in a while. Its at 39%... TksTeam is a group in which members work together intensively to achieve a common goal.

The SFC finished and the output was... "Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." But the machine is still "Preparing to install...". Its making me go crazy!!!Team is a group in which members work together intensively to achieve a common goal.

I just wanted to re-iterate the point I was making earlier: Please run the Checksur utility that corresponds to your version of OS from the below link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 Then, paste the contents of following logs here: %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log - thestriver

That cbs logs bit tells me that reboot was not required for whatever action was performed prior to this. This bit is a result that is not significant or relevant in troubleshooting your issue- thestriver

I've posted answer to Mr.thestriver's... Please have a look/see. There is something going on, but I can't figure what it is. As to resetting the SD, we have a solution for that provided by a sister company that has MS Premier Support. That solution cleans everything relating to WU. Thanls for any and all help!!!Team is a group in which members work together intensively to achieve a common goal.

From the log file, it provided an error code 0x80200053, which seems occur on downloading part. Generally this error is caused by connection issue, including third party program affect the downloading process such as firewall, antivirus program, webfilter etc. You can try to turn off such programs/functions and test again.
