Issue with Removing Roles
Here is my problem. I tried removing the IIS Role which for some reason gives me an error that it fails and required me to reboot. After the reboot a pop-up screen comes up saying that is Continuing the removal process. After that I get the same error and asks me to reboot again. If I say no I can't add or remove more roles pending that reboot. And this is going in a continuous loop. Looking at the event logs I can see the following info: Removal succeeded. A restart is required. Roles: Web Server (IIS) Warning: You must restart this server to finish the removal process. However after the reboot it does the same thing all over again. Any ideas? Thanks

I have a similar issue, that I can't seem to find any reference to...I was having issues and used the server manager to remove the .net 3.0 framework so I could perform a reinstall. Everything proceeded normally, the machine proceede to reboot which is normal for the removal of this feature. The issue arrises during the boot stage, when the message"configuring updates stage 3 of 3. 0% complete." is displayed. At first glance, this was normal, but after about 5 minutes of processing, it remained at 0%. Then the message changed to "stopping services" and then it reboots, and the process starts all over. 6 reboots and an hour later, I believe it was safe to assume it wasn't going to stop. All searches I find only indicate this issue on Vista. Knowing Vista and Server 2k8 share a similar code base, I'm guessing this Vista problem is able to manifest on Server 2k8 under some similar circumstance. I was able to force my server out of this loop by booting with the install DVD and using the command prompt to rename pending.xml. The KB with a hotfix for this issue on Vista ishttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358.After I got back into windows, it's pretty much swiss cheese. The portions of Exchange (OWA, ActiveSync) that rely on .net, crash because of the incomplete removal of .net 3. I'm unable to make any changes with Server Manager - after loading, refresh fails, and displaying the error gives:Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager: Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)). Searches for this error, give me SQL problems, nothing related to Server Manager.I've looked at the contents of the pending.xml file, and don't see anything out of the ordinary, and no obvious problems. I tried to initiate another removal of .net using the server manager command line options, but that just gave me an error. I found reference to an incomplete transaction in one of the logs, I'm hoping there's a way to force a rollback or abort, and have my pending.xml saved. If I put the pending.xml back where it belongs, and reboot, the reboot loop comes back.I dread a reinstall, but I'm at a loss at this point and completely open to suggestions. Thanks.DG
