I am wondering if this type of backup is even possible. Long story short I have a server that is running a RAID 1, two in the set and a hot spare. I want to rotate a 4th drive. In a nut shell the 4 drive will be my backup drive. In the event of a server failure I can take that 4 drive and move it over to a different server box and "boot" off that drive and resume working until my current server gets fixed. I know there is Symantec System Recovery and Acronis True image but I was more like referring to just taking the 4 drive plugging it in and just booting off that drive and the server is read to go. Is this method even possible?

Hello,it depends on the server role, if the server is domain controller, this is an unsupported backup and will result in USN rollbacks. For a simple fileserver this may work but keep in mind, that some data still can be missing when rotating is used.
