Internet Explorer Validation Error
I have just installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition on a Dell Server for the first time ever. I have installed a Belkin Wifi adaptor to allow Windows Updates.... Problem 1: If I open Internet Explorer and click on the tool bar, I get error messages saying "Internet Explorer encountered a validation error". The process is iexplorer.exe and it occurs on modules comctl.dll and mshtml.dll. Problem 2: (Which may be related to problem 1) ... if I goto Windows Update, the site immediately responds with a message saying Windows is upto date. However, the response is so quick, no scanning is liley to be taking place...and it is very unusual for a newly installed instance of windows not to need any updates. So I think Windows is not upto date at all. I have checked WiFi on Device Manager and the driver seems to be installed with no error messages or warnings.

Not sure about the error message you're seeing, but have you confirmed that you actually have internet access on the server, eg you're able to connect to other websites, or at least ping an external site (if IE throws up the error when you try using it)? IIRC, Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn't actually use the windows update site in the way that older versions do, rather visiting it causes the server to open the local Windows Update client (which obviously doesn't need an internet connection to run), so if you had no internet connection available it wouldn't be able to check in and I suspect will report that there are no updates required. Checking the log file (c:\windows\windowsupdate.log) should show you if Windows Update is having problems connecting to MS to check for updates.

Please try copy downloading the fresh copy of Windows server 2008 R2 from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd459137 and try it as this may happen due to corrupt version installedhttp://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

Hi, I would like to suggest you reset Internet Explorer settings to check the result. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How to reset Internet Explorer settings http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 If it does not work, please also try to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) to check the result. To download IE 9, please refer to the following Microsoft link: Download Internet Explorer http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie Regards, Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I finally figured what I think the problem was after reinstalling several times and several similar versions off MSDN. Although Dell had said its server would support the Enterpise version of Windows Server 2008, the small print said it only supported the Standard version. I then installed the standard version and the problem was resolved...
