Internet Connection Lost to PCs on Windows 2000 Server but not to Macs
I uninstalled my network adapter on Windows 2000 to try and repair an issue. When I restarted I no longer can get internet on my Server, or my Windows XP PCs, but I can get internet on my Mac. I have Cox cable internet and a Belkin wireless router. The wireless signal is fine, but my XP netbook cannot connect to it. My iphone can connect. I am not sure what else to try.

Hello, First of all, not that Windows 2000 is no longer supported by Microsoft since July 2010. Is your Windows 2000 Server a DNS server? If yes, I would suspect that you have a DNS resolution problem when this server is down or unreachable. Maybe your client computers are pointing to this DNS server as primary DNS server and there is no other secondary DNS server. If it is the case, make an XP computer points to a public DNS server as primary DNS server and check results. If this solve your problem then you can make your client computer points to your internal DNS server as primary DNS server and a public DNS server as secondary one. Again, Windows 2000 is no longer supported and note that it is recommended to have at least two DNS servers internally to ensure high-availability of DNS service. Thanks. I know my hands are tied with the 2000 Server. Since it was working before I did the uninstall of the network adapter, might that be what I need to look at? I had a similar problem a year ago when the Belkin Router and the Server were fighting over who was the server. Can you take me through some steps to check on the server? Thanks Andrew

Thanks. I believe it is a DNS server. Is there an easy way to check? Here's what I currently get from IP config on the server Connection Specific DNS Address - nothing Auto Config IP 169.254.55.167 Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0 Def Gateway Nothing I uninstalled the adapter because I was getting Perfib errors that were clogging my activity log. I should have left it alone.

The current IP address what you are showing is called APIPA.A feature of Microsoft Windows DHCP clients can obtain IP addresses when DHCP servers are non-functional. When a DHCP server fails, APIPA allocates IP addresses in the private range 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254. Clients verify their address is unique on the network using ARP. When the DHCP server is again able to service requests, clients update their addresses automatically. Check yout belkin router as its not providing the Automatic IP address to the computer or else you provide the static ip to the server with defaultgateway and the dns. I f you dont know what the default gateway and dns please see your other devices connected to interent or call the ISP to help you. http://www.arabitpro.com

Hi, Thank you for the post. I uninstalled the adapter because I was getting Perfib errors that were clogging my activity log. I should have left it alone. So you have uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter? After reinstalled network adapter, please set static ip address to the server and check the DHCP server and DNS server service status. If any events errors exist, please post it to us. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828872 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269155 If there are more inquiries on this issue, please feel free to let us know.
