Installing RIS on server 2003
Hi, im new to this, just need pointing in the right direction. I have 2 servers running W2k3, 1st is my PDC and has, DHCP, AD & DNS 2nd is a Member Server connected to my DC, no problem. Im trying to use the Member server as a RIS. I installed the RIS software from add/remove windows components, but when I click Remote Installation Services Setup Wizard and click next, I get "Domain Unavailable. RIS Setup cannot obtain information from a domain controller. Either the domain controller is not available, the current user doen not have permission to acces the Domain, this computer is not a member server in the domain, or this computer is joined to a workgroup instead of a domain" and wont let me install. NOTE : Im logged in as the Admin on the Member Server. ... but when I right click on the Remote Installation Services Setup Wizard, select RUN AS (then the "following user" radio button) and use the Domain Controllers Admin Credentials = hive.local\administrator, then my password, it lets me install... why is this ? Is it because Im logged on as local admin on my member server and dont have domain admin privileges to setup the RIS ? If so, how can I configure my DC to allow the Admin to setup via Remote Installation Services Setup Wizard? Is this behaviour normal , should I just use the run as ? Thanks

I believe it is because you are using the local account. Did you login to the member server using a domain user account? Can’t you use a domain account? RIS server needs to be part of AD. Please verify the requirement from the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325862 Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX Blogs - http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ Articles - http://www.sivarajan.com/publications.html Twitter: @santhosh_sivara - http://twitter.com/santhosh_sivara This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Sorry, its not a PDC (Pre-2000) its just a DC. I logged in using the local user admin account on the member server then it came up with "Domain Unavailable. RIS Setup cannot obtain information from a domain controller. Either the domain controller is not available, the current user doen not have permission to acces the Domain, this computer is not a member server in the domain, or this computer is joined to a workgroup instead of a domain" and wont let me install. " is this normal ? When I use my DC Admin Credendtials in RUN AS on the Member server it lets me proceed with RIS server installation. Do I need to create permissions on the DC to let my Member Server proceed with the installation ? Yes I have access to the Administrator account of th DC. It wont let me log on as anyone else other that Admin on the member server as it currently has no roles. Obviously I will authorize the member server on the DC once installed :) Cant you tell im a beginner :)
