Install Windows 2008 R2 to drive other than C?
I'm installing Windows 2008 R2 for use as a workstation OS on a clean system. I'd like to install the OS on an SSD, but I'd rather not have the SSD be the C: drive. Is there any way to create the partitions and assign drive letters during the
install, and install the OS to an E: drive, for example?

BobSFFM,
Guess my first question would be: Why not have the SSD be the C: drive? You can choose the LUN/Volume location during the install and when booted to the 2008 R2 install will be the C: drive. If you are multi-booting when you boot to the second
OS (assuming Win 7 or another client version) the 2008R2 SSD drive will show up as another drive letter and not C: (the C: drive will be the LUN/Volume you installed the other OS to)
Hope this helps, if not please provide some background info to how you want the system setup.

It is possible, YOu can Install in another drive like E: drive.
While installing in Windows Server 2008 R2, In Drive or Disk information screen you can just select Disk unallocated space and create new partition and install it there.
You are not able to assign drive letter at that stage. whatever drive letter will be next one, that will be selected automatically.MCT,MCSE,MCSA,MCTS, Server Administrator

The problem is that the next available drive letter is always C, because it is a clean install.
So it sounds like I am stuck with using C as the SSD.

Hello BobSFFM,
You can do this with an unattended file.
Since this is a clean system, you should check the Unattended Reference guide in the Windows AIK as well as the Windows Automated Installation Kit ( WAIK) users guide. When booting to the DVD, setup will search for an unattended file which can provide
the Drive letter to install Windows to.Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Volume Activation documentation on TechNet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd197314.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd996588.aspx

On July 1st we will be making Windows Server 2008 R2 General forum read only. After receiving a lot of feedback from the community, it was decided that
this forum is a duplication and therefore redundant of the General Forum. So, until July 1st, we will start asking customers to redirect their questions to the General Forum. On June 11th, CSS engineers will move any new threads to the General Forum.
Please post a reply to the announcement thread if you have any feedback on this decision or the process. You can also email WSSDComm@microsoft.com.Shaon Shan TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Windows 2008 installation process will set the pertition which installed operation system as Drive C by default.
I have not test on unattended file method, you may have a look on it. Found the guide on Microsoft website:
