In-place upgrade from Windows Server 2008 Standard to R2
Hi, We are looking to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard edition on a server currently running the Windows Server 2008 Standard edition. This server is also running SAGE ERP, which uses MS SQL Server 2008 database also running on this server. Could you suggest if an in-place upgrade is possible in this scenario, without losing any data and settings at all? Or, is it preferable to do a clean installation? What all should we be taking care of for this upgrade? Regards Yagyesh

Hello, for SQL better ask in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/sqlserver/ and for SAGE ERP please contact the vendor.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

Thank you Meinolf. But I have a confusion that when I do an in-place upgrade on my Windows Vista to Windows 7, all programs and data remain intact; whatever programs might be running from any vendor! So, doesn't the same apply in this scenario - why are we required to check with the respective vendors, please? Thanks Yagyesh

Hello, if you don't talk to the vendor about supported upgrades for the scenario you like to do, you are running into problems in the worst case scenario if you need there support to get SAGE ERP running again. And the same is about SQL, assure BEFORE that inplace upgrade is not a problem and the SQL experts are the better source to aks about this then here. In General inplace upgrade from the OS itself is supported and works fine.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
