In-Place Upgrade Server 2008 (32-bit OS to 64-bit OS) on x64 Hardware
Server 2008 Upgrade - x64 Hardware / Processor
I am needing to perform an in-place upgrade for the OS from 32-Bit Server 2008 Std SP2 (already installed on 64-bit hardware) to 64-Bit Server 2008 R2 Std SP1.
Since the server is already 64-bit hardware - I would like to confirm if this OS upgrade should be straight-forward or whether I am looking at the possibility of having to back-up data and perform a clean install for the 64-Bit version. I know
a clean install would be required if going from x86 hardware to x64 hardware.

No it's not supported to do a
cross-architecture in-place upgrade.

Hi,
Please understand that cross-architecture in-place upgrades (for example, x86 to x64) are unsupported in-place upgrades. For details
about supported and unsupported upgrade paths for Windows Server 2008 R2, I suggest we could refer to the Microsoft KB article.
