ICS/NAT help
Hello guys! Here is a post I posted earlier at Afterdawn: http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-165/windows_server_2008_ics_help-817121/ ---- Hello guys, first time I post, figured you guys would be able to provide me with the information I need. This is the first time I am setting up a server, so everything is a bit new to me still. This is the situation: we have a small office with three computers, and I figured we could set up a server using some old hardware (for lulz, basically). This office is situated in a big building with many offices and computers, and there is one internet connection for the whole thing, which means we until now had different static IP's for all computers in the office . Here is my plan: instead of all of our computers connecting directly to the internet and the house network, only the server would be connected to the house network+internet and it would then act as a DHCP server and share that connection with the other computers connected to it. Old way: Internet--(Static IP)--Computer 1 |--(Static IP)--Computer 2 |--(Static IP)--Computer 3 New way: Internet--(Static IP)--Server*--Switch--(Dynamic IP)--Computer 1 |--(Dynamic IP)--Computer 2 |--(Dynamic IP)--Computer 3 *The server has two network adapters I tried to set up DHCP on the server and I also tried to set up NAT, but to be completely honest, I'm not really sure what I technically want to do. I did manage to get the DHCP server running somehow, and I even got the clients to connect to the server (could browse shared folders), but I didn't manage to connect to the internet. I would really appreciate someone holding my hand a bit and helping me out, would be great to get this working. I will of course provide any additional details. Thanks in advance! ---- I would rather get this sorted (if it's possible to do) sooner than later, so I decided to post here as well. Any help is much appreciated! It seems I cannot get the chart looking as I'd like it to here, so please check the Afterdawn thread for details!

That should all work pretty much automatically. All you need to do is select the NAT option in the setup wizard and put in the addresses you need for the DHCP option. As long as you select the right option for the public and the private NICs in NAT, it just works. Internet | public IP RRAS/NAT 192.168.31.1 dg blank | clients 192.168.31.x dg 192.168.31.1 (from DHCP)Bill

Thank you very much for your answer! I don't have access to the server right now, so I am unable to test this further. Do I have to set up a DHCP server to run as well or does the RRAS option take care of that? In any case, I will see what I can do and if I cannot solve it, I'll post pictures and detailed information of my settings.

Hi,Yes, you need to set up a DHCP server in order to get dynamic IP address. The NAT service in RRAS does not assign dynmaic IP address to clients. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Vilkkuu, configuration required: Window 2003 server NTFS Partitions 2 LAN cards 1 Public IP address (static) 1 Private IP address(You have to assign IP address in 2nd lan connection) On server side: On first Lan card Keep the static ip address configure as it is. On second Lan card assign the private Ip address as IP address : 192.168.1.1 Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 Default gateway : Empty Preferred DNS Server : Empty Alternate DNS Server : Empty On Client side: IP address : 192.168.1.2 (You have to change the IP address on each client computer)) Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 Default gateway : 192.168.1.1 Preferred DNS Server : Empty Alternate DNS Server : Empty

Hello again, sorry for the late reply, and thank you for all your help so far. Unfortunately, I still cannot get the internet connection to be shared properly, and I cannot really see that I am doing anything wrong. Here are some more details: -DHCP is working, any computer I connect to the server get the IP address I assign, and they get the server IP assigned- as their default gateway (however, I did not fill in any DNS options in the wizard, mainly because I didn't know what domain I should enter) -Computers connected to the server can explore shared files on the server -The server can connect to the internet Routing and Remote Access with NAT is enabled, here is some detailed information (from RaRA - IPv4 - NAT): NAT-Properties-Address Assignment: The box is unticked NAT-Properties-Name Resolution: The box is unticked Local Area Connection 2: Private interface connected to the private network Local Area Connection: Public interface connected to the Internet, Enable NAT on this interface is ticked, Address Pool is empty, Services and Ports all are unticked I feel a bit stupid for not getting this to work. At one point I could connect to the internet with computers connected to the server when assigning the IP address to the clients manually, but I think that was using ICS, not NAT.
