I have tried on my own and following the Windows Server 8 lab - desktop VDI setup and I can't get any collection to be created. I have syspreped both Win 7 and Win 8 desktops, and the errors are the same (no very verbose). Event log has this:

A storage device in 'win8-master' loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server version 5.1  Client version 4.2 (Virtual machine ID 453F1D9F-B16E-41A6-89AC-E49FA1B938A4). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

But upgrading integration services on win7 made no difference.

The only error on the collections page is this (for the 2 virtual desktops in the pool):

Vir-0 - Failed: the operation has been cancelled.

Vi -1 - Failed: the virtual desktop did not start correctly

Any ideas?

Not marked as read only and not differencing disks. Clean install of both Win7 and Win8 - I might have used dynamic disks.

Originally i did a clean install of win7 - this created a VHDX, but I used the Win8 server quick start VHD role and it would not let me pick a VHDX - so i converted to VHD. The quick start VDI role wizard finished, but because the guest was not a sysprep image it failed on the collection setup. The HyperV box was an inplace upgrade to Win8 server - with an existing win8 desktop that was a VHD - that was recently converted to VHDX.

The error message is the only thing left on the screen after going through the create collections wizard. As for the Collection - there is only Vir-0 created - I can start it manually and log into it - but trying to hit it via Hyperv/rdweb gives me an RDP with just HyperV.acme.local as the server name - which is how I connect to the HyperV server.

I may just have to start over from scratch.... does the DC need to be Win8?

My goal was to see how floating pools worked in Win8 - I wanted to see if HyperV and its related tools are better at tearing down unused desktops so that differencing disks can be used without image size growing to bad. I would love to be able to get 100+ images on a 320gb Fusion-io drive, but this will only work if the differencing disks don't grow the way they did in 2008R2. Citrix is able to destroy and recreate clones, so I am hoping MS implemented somthing like this.

You can use dynamic disks and you do not need a Windows Server 8 DC, this is an issue with the VM itself and exporting the template VM.  I also would not throw in the towel and rebuild just yet...start with just rebuilding your template VM from scratch and make sure you use a VHD and not a VHDX.  Sysprep the template VM and see if you can create a collection successfully.  If you can create a collection, you can always delete it and then re-configure your template VM (add more applications or make other changes to it) and then sysprep it again before you create a new collection.  If you also configure user disks, the user data is preserved in a separate VHD file that is independent of the VM, allowing you to create and destroy VMs any time you need to without worrying about the user data.

Windows Server "8" Beta does support the re-creation of VMs based off of a template VM, but you must create a managed pool in order to use this feature.  Once the collection is created, you can add or delete VMs from the collection, and update the template VM with patches and then re-create all of the VMs in the pool.  The process is detailed in the Understand and Troubleshoot Guide, so please let me know if you have that document and if you have any further questions after looking through that.

Two things:

1. Did you configure the AD settings using the deployment properties UI? You would use this to configure the proper permissions on the OU that you wish the virtual machines to be created in.

2. The errors that are likely causing the problem are the following:

This usually means that the virtual machine does not have network connectivity to the RDVH host.  In order to provision a VM and add it to a collection, we need to make sure it has booted correctly and finished with SYSPREP mini-setup. Can you logon to the New-0 VM directly and check its status?  Does it have a valid IP address?  Can the RDVH server communicate with it?

I found the issue for #1 - i glossed right over the hyper-link for domain permissions in the collections wizard. Seemed like something optional and I was doing the deployment as Domain Admin. I don't see this called out in the tutorial anywhere either, but it modified the perms on the OU and I had not done that before.

In regards to the 2nd issue, I am building a new collection now and then will check connectivity. I only have 2 machines in my network:

1. DC - virtual and running on VMware (I know, but i have to support it for now) - DC is 2008 R2 and running DNS (but not DHCP)

2. Hyper V (physical) that is a member of domain and is hosting all the VDI roles

Since DHCP is handled by my router, I guess i could have guest machines that are not getting the DC as the DNS server and thus can't find the RDVH server.

I think i have it figured out now, but it will take a bit for me to decide how I want to fix things.

The UTG does cover configuring Active Directory in the section titled Management Tasks and the subsection Global Settings.  I agree that it could be made more clear however and called out better as a step that is necessary to create a VDI deployment.  Thank you for the feedback on that and I will look into getting it updated.

Just started again from scratch. Isolated subnet - New  Win 8 server as DC/DHCP/DNS and second new physical Hyper-V member server all set up per lab documents. Set up Win 8 client per docs and now went through new collection wizard - still fails.

Need to enable RDMS UI Tracing and will past log after one more go.

Error is same as above in the GUI - here is what the logs say... still no idea from the error messages - but the environment has the proper servers etc.

The golden master is created; 8gb vhhdx - and the first computer in the pool - has a 1.6gb VHDX - but that is it. The golden image has a virtual machine directory that only contains an XML file - while the pool machine has a GUID directory with a BIN file and another file - so it appears to finish one of the VM's but not the second - it just seems to end for some reason.

Again brand new lab build out from scratch - just as lab win8 docs describe

Wanted to update the thread on the resolution to this:

1. Template VM virtual DVD was connected to physical drive in the host and not an ISO, this caused the VMs in the collection to fail to boot as they all tried to grab the physical DVD of the Hyper-V host.

2. DHCP was not authorized in the domain and so the VMs did not have a valid IP address.

I actually have the very same problem as you had. I try to create a collection, it from a WIndows 7 system. The collection creation starts, but will never end, and I don't get any error message.

A Virtual machine is actually created (Win0, default name). If I try to connect on this VM , using a local account,and make sure about its IP settings it works. The Vm is on the domain , and gets an IP address.

I can ping most of the servers ( DC, DNS...) using both their name and Ip address, except for the virtualization server which I can only ping using its IP address, not his name. QUiet strange.

When I go to the Virtualization Host event viewer, I will find the same message you had:

Remote desktop Virtualization Host could not run the Hyper-V VMI Job

and

Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to verify domain connectivity of the virtual machine (Win-0)

To summarize my environment, we have 2 physical servers with Windows server 2012 , one is not on the domain and is hosting all infrastructure VMs ( DC, RDS Services, DNS...)

The other physical server is on the domain , it is installed also with Windows 2012, and is only used as Virtualization Host.

All of this is using a dedicated VLAN, and has a DHCP.

So I am stuck here, any help would be highly appreciated.

I can confirm I am having the exact same problem and am able to ping by ip and hostname from the template and RDVH.

Okay.. I got to the bottom of my own (same) issue.

In short, I hadn't allocated enough RAM to the proto VHD used for the collection.

I had only allocated 786MB when 2GB was needed for x64 based Win8 guests.

That solved it for me.

Other helpful items (for future searchers):

1. The docs imply you need to have the RemoteFX graphic driver in the Proto VHD. This is not true. I'm sure its a NICE to have, but it does work without it. I spent like 482943 hours trying to get the GPU recognized in HyperV, only to discover.. this is just not needed (in a test lab environment.) I DOES pass without it.

2. I was unable to ever get deep TXT and LOG logging to work as noted in this tech article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2747656?wa=wsignin1.0). If enhanced logging had worked for me I might have been able to discover this a lot quicker.

I want to add another solution

After two weeks of hunting down my problem of creating a pooled collection with a template, I found that using older windows 7 ISO non SP1 will cause the VDI template to error out as not ready for deployment. Even after all updates and SP1 is installed.

Creating a fresh template with old ISO did not help

Creating a fresh template with New ISO with SP1 solved the problem.

I had this issue as well, but none of the recommended fixes solved my problem.

The Win7SP1x64ENT image I was using took a day to build, so I didn't want to recreate it.

Long story short, I ran a convert operation on the VHD to create a new file, attached the new VHD to my Proto VM, and everything worked perfectly.
