How to moving the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles in windows server 2003?
Hi, Do you want to transfer the roles or seize the roles? In order for a transfer to work both computers must be available on-line. If a computer no longer exists, then the role must be seized. To seize a role, you must use a utility called Ntdsutil. Transferring can only be done if the original DC is alive on the network. If a domain controller hosting a single operations master role is no longer available (possibly due to catastrophic failure), you will not be able to transfer that role to another domain controller. If that is the case, then you can move that role to another DC by seizing the role. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255690 Transferring FSMO Roles www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm Seizing FSMO Roles www.petri.co.il/seizing_fsmo_roles.htm Regards, Rafic If you found this post helpful, please give it a "Helpful" vote. Hi Iamrafic, Here are the steps that i took after read the link. 1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers 2. Right on the domain name, select "Connect to Domain Controller " in the Enter the name of another domain controller box. I type the IP Address of another domain such as: \\192.168.2.123 Error message: --------------------------- Active Directory --------------------------- Windows cannot connect to the domain controller for the following reason: The server is not operational. If you are trying to connect to a domain controller running Windows 2000, verify that Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 or later is installed on the domain controller, or use the Windows 2000 administration tools. For more information about connecting to domain controllers running Windows 2000, see Help and Support. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Regard StuckFree

Hi, Make sure the target server is reachable. Run netdom query fsmo to check the current role holders. Open the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in from the Administrative Tools folder. If you are NOT logged onto the target domain controller, in the snap-in, right-click the icon next to Active Directory Users and Computers and press Connect to Domain Controller.Select the domain controller that will be the new role holder, the target, and press OK.Right-click the Active Directory Users and Computers icon again and press Operation Masters.Select the appropriate tab for the role you wish to transfer and press the Change button.Press OK to confirm the change.Press OK all the way out.
