How to enable Audit logs
Hi,
I have recently been made the admin for a SharePoint site. I wanted to track over time which users were viewing which documents. I am very new to SharePoint and having no idea how to do it, I did some search and appears that sharepoint has audit logs which
when enabled can give you that information. While I tried to follow the tutorials it appears I donot have all the menu options mentioned in the tutorials.i wanted to know what level of access do I need in order to enable audit logs? I would appreciate a descriptive
answer as the person I would be explaining is also not a SharePoint expert:).At the moment when I Go into Siti Actions->Site Settings-> I don't get any 'Site Collection Administration' or' Site collection audit settings' option.

Make sure you are site collection administrator. Site Collection Administration will appear only for administrators

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff631156.aspx
I hope this answers all your questions.

This functionality is available from the root site collection. You may be the owner of a particular site but site collection administrator role is needed to turn this on. Either you may ask the administrator to turn this on or request the administrator
to add you to the list of administrators.

Thanks for all the replies. This is all very helpful. I requested Site Collection Admin rights & now I do get Site Collection Administration menu in my Settings but it doesn't have the audit options. I understand that audit logging should first
be enabled in the Central Management in order for me to get those option. Is that right?

Options I get are
- Recycle bin
- Site Collection Features
- Site hierarchy
- portal site connection
- storage metrics
- SharePoint designer settings
- Visual upgrade
- help settings

Yes, you are required to enable auditing that will let you track and collect these event logs.
As an alternative, you may also check this automated solution (http://www.sharepointauditing.com/) that helps to track and collect the data into real time.
