How to correctly setup file share for Office documents
Question is simple. I have Root_folder\Level_One\file.xls Root folder has share permission Everyone FC. NTFS Permission: Root_folder : Everyone - List folder content Level_One : Everyone - List folder content (inherited from X:\Root_folder) Group A – Modified (not inherited) (domain local security group) File.xls : Group A – Modified (inherited from X:\Root_folder\RETAIL) (domain local security group) Group B – Modified (not inherited) (universal security group) Uses in Group A have all permission needed to do modification . Users that are directly in group B can access file. Group B has several nested groups. Users that belongs to that group has no permission ? Does Office require travers folders, for group, that have no inheritance ?

The issue is how MS Office handles file saving procedure. It does not modify existing file, but creates a new file instead. Thus, you should assign GroupB: Modify permission for the RETAIL folder as well. If you do not want all the files inside Retail folder to be modified by GroupB members, create a separate Retail\Something subfolder with GroupB:Modify permission on it and move appropriate documents inside that folder.MCITP: Enterprise Administrator; MCT; Microsoft Security Trusted Advisor; CCNA
