How to configure 2 NIC on the same subnet?
Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice. I have a server with 2 network connections registered on the same subnet. 1 for Data and 1 For management. Whats the best way to configure these so you can work out which is which. By default they both register them selfs in DNS as the same name so you never know which one your connectiong to. Currently I have one set to register with DNS and one not with a static DNS entry, but the 6To4 connection keeps registering it self and I have no idea to stop that on the second connection. Thanks

The best way is not to do it at all. You certainly don't want both IPs in DNS. It seems a good idea but it causes all sorts of problems. The only way to get it to work is make sure that only one IP registers in DNS and always connect to the "other" interface by IP address. You will also have problems with Netbios names if Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on both interfaces. Bill

Hi, Please also notice the setting of default gateway entry on this server since this would probably cause some issues when choice a source interface: Default Gateway Configuration for Multihomed Computers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/157025 Expected Behavior of Multiple Adapters on Same Network http://support.microsoft.com/kb/175767 Regards, Tiger Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.
