Only got one answer so far, but that answer says four and beyond with a smiley. So running Quad-core today should be possible, and when you look at the virtualization demos there's 16. Not an official standpoint though.

Well i would be surprised to see them changing the supported numbers of cpus from what Windows Server 2003 series have. Microsoft have since a few years been using a licensing model depending on the number of cpu's not cores. Read more here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/evaluate/features/compare.mspx note that there are differences between x86 and x64 versions.

>>We will support up to 512 Cores with the c64 edition of Windows Server 2008. Can you please elaborate? 1)you mean x64 not c64 right? 2)How many cores will say the Enterprise Version support, and how is this related to the number of sockets & hyperthreading exactly? eg. Windows 2008 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/editions/specifications.mspx shows Datacentre at 64 sockets. How are the 512 cores to be supported? - by 64 CPU's at 8 cores each or - by 64 CPU's at 4 cores each, and each core with 2 threads (SMT/hyperthreading etc.), in which case this is 512 threads not cores. Thanks SImilarly, Enterprise only supports 8 sockets, so does this give it 32 cores or 64 cores? 2)Another question re: Windows 2003 Server, R2... It supports 8-way symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). Does this mean it only supports 8 cores, or even 8 threads (SMT/hyperthreading? ) , or does it support 8 sockets, with any number of cores & threads? Unfortunately the Microsoft WebSite does not go into enough detail on any of these. Windows 2003 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/evaluate/features/compare.mspx Thanks Cheers Minas

" Microsoft defines a logical processor as the number of physical processors multiplied by the number of cores as well as the number of threads, said corporate vice president for Windows Server and solutions, Bill Laing, during a keynote speech at the company's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC).
