How do I find what's taking up my memory
For Sever 2008. The server has 24G of memory. I've now limited SQL Server to 16GB, and I'm at 21.2GB used now. Of my other processes, I have about 2GB, so that should be around 18GB. Is windows server system files taking up the other 3GB? I'm running perfmon, but it's hard to tell what's taking up the memory. SQL Server total memory is 16,777,216.000. I looked at the memory tab, but I don't see anything, what should I look for? dan

1. Resource Monitor. Open Task Manager and on the Performance tab click Resource Monitor. 2. Data Collector Sets in Performance Monitor. More info: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191246.aspxMCTS...

That doesn't really tell me anything. I'm missing 3GB somewhere. Resource monitor tells me nothing new, and If I run a Data Collector set I just get this: It's not adding up to 22 GB Process Process ID Commit (KB) Working Set (KB) Shareable (KB) Private (KB) sqlservr##1 2544 25,865,548 158,400 30,780 127,620 sqlservr 2420 25,668,232 241,968 22,508 219,460 ReportingServicesService##1 3672 6,697,912 315,368 19,780 295,588 ReportingServicesService 2836 6,679,860 307,632 20,184 287,448 MsDtsSrvr 1996 5,523,588 19,208 8,876 10,332 dgServer 1932 3,881,748 1,304,032 3,940 1,300,092 svchost##3 928 796,804 57,276 14,980 42,296 mmc 4932 748,404 34,032 16,100 17,932 msmdsrv 2380 702,220 30,528 11,664 18,864 msmdsrv##1 2756 699,212 29,292 10,896 18,396 svchost##6 480 653,516 21,068 6,632 14,436 Ssms 5832 572,388 136,184 70,376 65,808 SQLAGENT 4292 538,924 8,448 4,528 3,920 explorer 6556 329,668 66,744 27,372 39,372 TrustedInstaller 4864 321,072 48,688 3,280 45,408 mmc##1 4484 252,140 57,124 29,548 27,576 Rtvscan 2744 236,348 4,520 1,864 2,656 spoolsv 1644 223,348 36,176 13,456 22,720 explorer##1 6916 210,248 27,276 10,556 16,720 UnivAgent 1844 193,336 31,024 10,588 20,436 Smc 376 187,232 8,232 3,320 4,912 svchost##2 888 142,432 66,408 2,680 63,728 rundll32 8008 140,704 48,928 7,040 41,888 SmcGui 6592 135,352 6,852 4,344 2,508 SmcGui##1 1744 134,328 5,920 3,712 2,208 WmiPrvSE 6540 133,872 34,044 9,484 24,560 lsass 596 125,124 50,852 7,180 43,672 sqlbrowser 4056 119,900 8,532 3,016 5,516 sqlwriter 3256 115,368 9,004 3,960 5,044 ccSvcHst 244 114,980 6,228 1,624 4,604 AsnaSvcHost 1692 112,132 6,376 4,128 2,248 UI0Detect 4304 97,388 7,684 4,228 3,456 ProtectionUtilSurrogate 6744 93,760 9,952 6,236 3,716 ProtectionUtilSurrogate##1 2516 93,760 9,680 5,872 3,808 svchost##5 240 93,672 16,536 5,188 11,348 taskmgr##1 5848 92,476 13,308 8,424 4,884 AgPkiMon 5764 89,096 14,736 5,456 9,280 LogonUI 872 88,916 13,772 7,424 6,348 taskmgr 7348 83,552 8,160 4,876 3,284 jusched 6816 82,984 6,384 3,000 3,384 jusched##1 2404 81,160 6,240 3,632 2,608 jucheck 4808 80,368 5,384 2,780 2,604 VSSVC 5188 79,748 10,444 3,012 7,432 jucheck##1 6392 79,552 6,292 3,600 2,692 casdscsvc 1820 78,280 7,416 2,276 5,140 ccApp 6824 73,740 680 344 336 ccApp##1 6304 73,740 700 352 348 rdpclip 4144 72,820 6,992 4,216 2,776 rdpclip##1 5892 65,612 4,908 2,624 2,284 svchost##1 780 63,212 11,536 3,408 8,128 svchost##8 1672 62,948 8,364 4,432 3,932 msdtc 4972 62,744 5,384 2,564 2,820 svchost##7 1444 60,660 9,868 4,920 4,948 lic98Service 1980 59,128 3,540 1,836 1,704 csrss 436 57,724 3,840 1,740 2,100 LogWatNT 1960 57,052 3,568 1,952 1,616 svchost 700 56,208 9,156 3,656 5,500 services 588 54,352 11,308 4,464 6,844 taskhost 884 53,156 4,528 3,036 1,492 taskhost##1 7000 53,156 4,632 3,064 1,568 dwm 6532 52,408 4,060 2,624 1,436 dwm##1 396 51,876 4,132 2,224 1,908 wininit 496 50,376 3,364 2,132 1,232 fdhost 5168 50,016 5,404 1,856 3,548 fdhost##1 5412 48,992 5,404 1,860 3,544 svchost##4 1004 47,496 8,588 3,724 4,864 csrss##2 4804 46,064 5,480 3,680 1,800 svchost##12 5600 44,912 7,120 3,720 3,400 csrss##1 488 44,172 3,512 1,752 1,760 csrss##3 4084 43,540 4,124 2,704 1,420 sppsvc 6856 42,776 10,120 4,548 5,572 svchost##11 2988 40,632 9,368 4,484 4,884 winlogon##1 4840 40,048 4,848 2,652 2,196 WmiPrvSE##1 8136 36,940 8,348 4,324 4,024 lsm 608 34,624 5,660 2,776 2,884 svchost##15 2304 33,540 4,808 2,908 1,900 dllhost 7080 32,968 6,720 3,292 3,428 WmiApSrv 7052 32,836 7,836 4,052 3,784 taskeng 7140 32,600 6,828 3,356 3,472 svchost##10 2960 32,192 4,460 2,324 2,136 svchost##13 5636 31,948 4,080 2,704 1,376 winlogon##2 960 30,188 4,520 2,448 2,072 conhost 4504 29,912 2,448 1,136 1,312 svchost##14 4036 29,488 4,212 2,516 1,696 PrintIsolationHost 8328 28,672 5,484 2,920 2,564 svchost##9 2776 27,340 3,020 1,656 1,364 winlogon 536 27,036 3,264 1,688 1,576 fdlauncher 4776 26,216 3,552 1,560 1,992 fdlauncher##1 4764 26,216 3,708 1,604 2,104 conhost##1 5176 25,676 2,372 944 1,428 conhost##3 5772 22,548 2,680 1,212 1,468 conhost##2 5420 22,256 2,576 1,076 1,500 smss 340 5,560 1,420 504 916 System 4 3,380 304 244 60 Idle 0.000 0 24 0 24 dan

Then consider using a 3rd party software like: http://www.manageengine.com/free-windows-health-monitor/free-windows-health-monitor-index.html Also chek out this article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2010/06/09/wmi-leaks-memory-on-server-2008-r2-monitored-agents.aspxMCTS...
