How do I exclude a volume from VSS
Hello,
Running Windows Server 2003 SE SP2 (up to date), i have an un-formated partition which use the G: drive letter.
This Partition must stay unformated because a specific application use it as is.
When we start the VSS services we have the following warningin application log
Event ID : 12290
Source : VSS
Description : Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW(\\?\Volume{c243d40a-2ae4-11e0-87c4-e61f1359b407}\,NULL,0,NULL,NULL,[0x00000000], , 260) == 0x00000057. hr = 0x00000000.
VSS serivce works for a while, and finally fails.
The Volume id in the error message is exactly the id of my unformated partition (I checked this with mountvol)
So I need to exclude the volume from VSS
After some search I found that I can add a Multi-Reg in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
Name: Exclude G drive
Data : {c243d40a-2ae4-11e0-87c4-e61f1359b407} /s
I also try with "g:\*.* /s" or "g:\* /s"
But it did not solve my problem.
Is there a specific way to exclude a volume from VSS ?

Hi Yannick,
Can you just disable Shadow Copy on drive g with right click on drive g, choose Properties, go to Shadow Copies tab, highlight drive g and click Disable?

I've already think about it ;)
On G: drive properties, the Shadow Copies tab does not exist : I have General; Tools; Hardware Tabs
On other drives, the Shadow Copies tab show all volumes available on the server, except the G:\ drive.

In 2003, Shadow Copies are managed in Computer Management -> Right-Click "Shared Folders" container -> All Tasks -> Configure Shadow Copies. The registry key you've mentioned is about NTBackup program.MCITP: Enterprise Administrator; MCT; Microsoft Security Trusted Advisor; CCNA

I click "Shared Folders" container -> All Tasks -> Configure Shadow Copies
This action display the same window than the right click on other existing drives and my G:\ drive is still not present.

Does your special application vendor say anything about that?MCITP: Enterprise Administrator; MCT; Microsoft Security Trusted Advisor; CCNA

Nope, they do not provide any specific explanation regarding VSS. Only, to keep a partition unformated :(
