Hello, Biztalk is on a physical server and we want it to talk to a sql server thats on the cloud server. What could be the possible reasons that we are not able to talk to the sql on the cloud server and how to overcome them.
Please suggest. Thanks!

Can you clarify on what you mean by 'talk to'?

You can use the BizTalk Server VM on the Azure.

To place BizTalk Server on premises and the SQL Server on cloud looks suspicious to me. BizTalk and SQL should be linked with high speed network with low latency. The second concern is security. Not sure you can secure your SQL on the transnational level.

To get talking you should have the servers in the same domain

  1. All PORTS required for AD Authentication, GPO, ICMP Echo between your organization and the cloud should be OPENED across the organization firewall, etc. - This will enable you to bring the cloud server into your domain.
  2. All PORTS required for SQL communication should be permitted between the physical server and the cloud server.
  3. All PORTS required for MSDTC to work need to be in place

Other than that I would agree with Leonids observations about the need for high speed and low latency access between the BizTalk Front-end and the SQL back-end.

Thank you for your reply. I am able to access the cloud sql server from the sql server management studio on the physical server.Do you still think that its a fire wall issue that I am not able to configure BizTalk with the SQL on the cloud server.

How do we check the ports for the MSDTC and the port for the SQL are permitted to talk to the SQL on the cloud server.

Any suggestions would be really helpfull.

Create BizTalk server and Sql server on same domain and all ports mandatory- for Microsoft distributed transaction coordinator to work in place, for the physical server and the cloud server SQL communication should be allowable and for active directory authentication and cloud should not be closed across the organization firewall.

Thank you for your reply. I have found that few of the required ports for Biztalk server need to be opened. So still waiting for reply from the windows admin. Should the local DTC properties be same on the cloud and the physical server.

@LKBT:

Please, let us know how it is going. It is really interesting how moving servers into a distributed network with high latency and low reliability will influence the overall performance, how this will change the transaction behavior.

Hello,

I have opened the RPC dynamic port range by following the steps mentioned in this article.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306843

I was able to open only 5000 but not 5020. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832017/en-us for the set of ports for Windows Server 2008 onwards. The new recommended range now is from 49152 -   65535. The eralier recommendations specified low ports 1024-5000 but not anymore. From Windows Vista onwards Microsoft has changed the port range as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929851/en-us

I want to open two ports 5000 and 5020. Can we open only these two ports by making changes in the rpc.

the documents talk about a range and the range is 5000-5020 but they also mention that you should look at making ~100 odd ports available so I do not think only opening 5000 & 5020 would suffice.

Thanks for your input. But in the document its mentioned as " We recommend that you open ports from 5000 and higher, and that you open a minimum of 15 to 20 ports." So I guess it shouldn't be a problem if we open 15 to 20 ports.
