Having multiple subdomains in a domain
Hello all, I'm trying to build this: One main domain controller for example: limited.local, but I want to add some subdomains for example: koek.limited.local. What I've got now is a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterpise 64bit and a Hyper-V machine with also Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64bit. On the Hyper-V machine I want to make the extra subdomains but it is also the main domain controller. So what I'm trying to say it. I want to have a Domain controller that is called for example: limited.local and have multiple subdomains that are in the same AD structure so I don't need to make for every new subdomain a new Virtual Machine and configure that etc.. Example: - Limited.local - Utrecht.Limited.local - OU's - Amsterdam.Limited.local - OU's

Do you mean that you want to install multiple domains (a root domain + child domains) on the same domain controller? If yes, this is not feasable. You should have at least one domain controller per domain. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. As I see you have: * A root domain: Domain.local * Two child domains: Name1.Domaine.local and Name2.Domain.local It is recommanded to have at least 2 domain controllers for each domain (6 domain controllers at least). That is true, but that is not what we want. We just want one DC that has child domains. Do you see our problem... How do we do that...

It is possible to perform that. You should at least have a domain controller per domain. There is no way to proceed to do that. Pilloe, A DC cannot peform the domain role for more than one domain. If you need three domains, you will need at least three DCs. For a production environment, as Mr X indicated, it would be best to implement 6 DCs. Now if this is something you are just testing, you could use ONE PHYSICAL server running virtualization software (Hyper-V, VMWare, etc...) and then create three guest systems, each running Windows Server. This way, you have three servers, but on one piece of hardware. Keep in mind that this would not be recommended for designing a production infrastructure.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
