Good practice? Approved All!

I have a virtual WSUS 2012 R2 with simple updates to workstations only, no servers.

Products = Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Classifications: Critical Updates, Security Updates, and Service Packs

Instead of going to each updates to decide approve or decline, can I just simply approve them all and to apply to all computers? Since updates are directly downloading from Microsoft server, I don't have to worry about local disk space consumption.

To my understanding, any updates that won't apply to the system, they won't be downloaded and installed regardless I approved them.

Approve all updates to all All Computers saving time! I am just one of a lazy system admin to find a way to work smart, not work hard! We have been doing approve and decline each updates, this is a tedious work! Thanks in advance for your

nothing wrong with approve all, but I usually wait around a week before approving each month's updates in case there were any problematic ones which MS would pull from the download catalog, that's about the only advice I can give here

Only issue I see with this is possible space issues. I set up a wsus server 2 days ago on the vnext tp2 and selected all on selective branches and was looking at a 65gig download. Would be nice if there was a select all for just updates needed by computers.

yeah it's huge depending on the products and classifications u select. u can reduce the space by selecting only the languages required and not using express update option. regularly run the cleanup wizard as well.

I wouldn't compromise on security, stability and performance related updates in my environment because of some disk space though...

In WSUS you can pick the products that you sync with MS. Using the products and classifications section in WSUS. This will limit the OS's if you do not have disk space for all the downloads. I am just getting rid of Windows XP as a product this year, yay!

I actually had cherry picked my entries before hand. I can only imagine what the total download size would have been if I had selected and approved everything. Probably more then my san could handle.

Congrats on finally getting rid of windows eXPired. :) Unfortunately half my domain is still running that and with our funding will probably take at least another 3 years to finally clear out the xp boxes. If windows 10 actually manages to stick around a while we might actually manage to get all the workstations in our domain on the same os. speaking of windows 10, I noticed that there are actually entries in wsus for it now though there don't appear to be any updates available through that route yet. Have this windows 10 pro connected to the wsus server and nothing available, 5 updates available if I tell it to go direct.
