General Server Licensing (Across The Board)
Hello all, I understand that I can call into microsft and get licensing questions answered. But I am hoping I will not have to. My question can better be explained in a description. Can you tell me if the following scenerio is correct using about 80 users as the base, I understand device and user cal so... WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs (AD Server) WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs (File Server) WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs (Applications Server) WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs (Applications Server) WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs + 1 MSSQL 2005 Socket LIC. (1 Socket MSSQL 2005 SQL Server) WINDOWS 2K3 STND SERV - Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs + 80 EXCHANGE 2007 LIC. (Exchange 2007 Server) Do I really have to purchase 80 CALs for each server that will draw a connection from a user in someway shape or form? What would the model look like if I used Enterprise editions instead of Standard? Thanks for your time.

Yes, I'm going to reply to myself. From what I understand (and this is where I need corrected if I'm wrong). I would apply licensing to my AD and let the AD hand out the tockens to the rest of the domain systems. I would need to license my exchange server for each mailbox, and my sql server for each connection. But not Windows CALs for every box. WIN 2K3 STND SERV - 1 Server LIC. + 80 U/CALs (AD Server) WIN 2K3 STND SERV - 1 Server LIC. + SQL CALs (SQL Server) WIN 2K3 STND SERV - 1 Server LIC. + Exchange CALs (Exchange Server) WIN 2K3 STND SERV - 1 Server LIC. (File Server) WIN 2K3 STND SERV - 1 Server LIC. (App Server) As far as Enterprise editions go. It would be a feature set change, such as enabling clustering, addition RDP sessions. I have still yet to find the feature matrix breakdown of Standard vs Enterprise. Anyway... I would enjoy getting some feedback. Thanks again.

Thank you Deva. :) I guess the licensing waters are a little muddy. Just hope that I can get a written copy of the lic scenario once I am off the phone. Trying to remember what is said and applying it might leave gaps. Cheers all!
