Forwarding url to ip and port
We are using sharepoint list for our calendar which can be accessed from http://servername:5965/Lists/Calendar/calendar.aspx. Because the address is hard to remember, we want to set it our servers in such a way that when users type calendar.domainname.com, they will be brought to that address. That way we can make it available externally as well. I understand that this might be done through sharepoint but am exploring other ways to go about it because we would like to keep that untouched and accessible from both addresses. Our servers are on windows server 2003. I have gone into the DNS forward lookup table and created a HOST(A) record to point to server name. However I am unable to get it to point to the port number. How would I go about this? Much help is appreciated.

Hi, You can access your dns server and create a new host for the above url which was stated in your subject. After the host is created in your DNS server in the DN container. you ca proceed to create a CNAME e.g calendar.domainname.com right click the CNAME and input the ip address of the webserver alternative way is.. if you are using apache webserver or tomcat you can re-direct the calendar.domainname.com to http://ps-ms01:5965/Lists/Calendar/calendar.aspx because they have features to performed re-direction. hope this explains. Thanks for your reply. I do apologise. I got a bit lost at the very beginning. So I should add for example 'servername' as a host(A) record or 'calendar'. However, it does NOT allow me to select a port. And I believe we might be on the wrong track here. There are other things running on that server. When I enter the ip of servername into the url bar, it shows that its linking to port 80. What I would like to do is have the address calendar.domainname.com to 'map or direct it' to http://servername:5965/Lists/Calendar/calendar.aspx. The emphasis is on the port 5965. How would I go about this? Much help is appreciated.

Hi Andre, yes you will need to create a host record for <calendar> therefore when being ask for ip address for <calendar>. You will have to input the ip address of the webserver which is hosting http://ps-ms01:5965/Lists/Calendar/calendar.aspx 1) Is the above URL hosted externally or internally ? 2) Does port 5965 being permit on your firewall ? 3) are using fortinet, sonicwall, cisco ASA, juniper, watchguard ? 4) Possible to advised if you are using apache or tomcat for webserver hosting ? Will definitely be glad to assist you further :)Guowen Su | CCNA, CCIP, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP, CEH | http://www.microsoft.com/en/sg/default.aspx Our Goal? VERY SATISFIED Customers. Hi Andre Cheah, I kinda agree with the above solution provided to you, i guess you would need to proceed to check on your webserver if you are using JES, Apache, Tomcat for hosting ?

Thanks for getting back to me Guowen, I have created the Host(A) entry in the DNS. You mentioned in your first post about creating a CNAME in the DN container. Where would that be? 1) The url is hosted internally 2) At this stage am looking at setting up internally first. Once that works I should be able to figure it out. 3) Watchguard 4) This server is our domain server which has sharepoint installed. I would assume that its IIS then? Thanks for helping out guys. Look forward to your response. I have been fiddling around with this for ages before coming to the forums.

Hi Andre, Thanks for posting here. Just FYI, have you consider to set sub site instead sub domain if just try to sort the URL ? see the article below: Redirecting a SharePoint Subsite or a Site collection to a different URL http://blogs.technet.com/b/harmeetw/archive/2009/09/08/redirecting-a-sharepoint-subsite-or-a-site-collection-to-a-different-url.aspx Thanks.
