Files within the all users documents vanished
Hi all,
Thanks in advance for anyone who can shed any light on the following and even more thanks if you know the answer.
I am running a 2003 enterprise server with sql and have only approx 8 users max that can remote desktop to run a program installed on the server. For simplicity we use the all users shared folder to store a few files in. Just recently the files
seem to vanish for no apperent reason. I have logged in as administrator and still the files do not seem to be there.
I have checked and they were not deleted and have used a file restoration software package to try and check this. It is as though they never existed. It is pure random when this happens but the outcome is always the same the folder is empty.
I hve checked the event logs and they can shed nothing on this either. At first I thought one of the users had deleted them, but it has happened to myself also when I know there was no users remoting the server.
This server is purely internal use so is not connected to the outside, plus the time it happened to myself the server was disconnected from the network and I had placed a file into the folder I then proceeded to create a new user and when I went back to
the all users shared folder to grab the file there was nothing there. Logged off/on same results even a full reboot still nothing.
Like I say it has happened at random times and so far searching around as not come up with anything that I can put my finger on and say yes that is what I am experiencing.
Hope someone can help.
Cheers,
Kev

A couple of things that come to mind:
Have you enabled any folder redirection group policy settings?
Have you configured a terminal services or remote desktop services profile on the AD account?
Could your profiles be corrupted and you are getting new ones, check c:\documents and settings for unexpected folders.
If all else fails, enable file system auditing and review the event log the next time it happens.
