Files go missing with Offline Files enabled on Home Drive

Server 2008 R2 Domain

We have a Shared Folder's offline settings set to "All files and programs that users open from the share are automatically available offline".  This is used for mapping the user's Home Folder (H:\) set in the AD user properties.

There are no group policies set to change offline files. PCs have offline files and sync center enabled by default.

We are seeing issues when a user creates a file on their PC and saves it to their H:\ drive, it will show up on that PC but will not show up in their H: drive if they log into a different PC.

We want to disable offline files on the domain, but don't want to lose all these files that users have created.

Any ideas?

We are seeing issues when a user creates a file on their PC and saves it to their H:\ drive, it will show up on that PC but will not show up in their H: drive if they log into a different PC.

So the user can see the file in H: on his computer but not when he log into another computer.

This could be caused if Offline Files are not updated to server yet. Will it work if clicking Sync in Sync Center? Or will it work when user logged off the first computer before logon the second one?

If you are going to disable Offline Files, make sure all users are logged off before that - you can force a restart or logoff and disable Offline Files.

Which OS are your clients? If Windows 7, then you should make sure you have installed the following hotfixes. I had the same issue as you and resolved using the hotfix:

Offline files synchronization may not finish on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows 7 PCs.  We tried the hotfix but it did not resolve the issue.

If we change the Share permissions to "no files or programs from the shared folder are available offline" - and reboot the PC - what will happen to the files cached on the PC?  Will they now show up on the Server?  Or disappear into the hidden cache?

Hi,

Still, what will happen if you click Sync, or logoff/reboot a client computer? Will files being synced correctly?

Disable offline files may remove the local copies so try to make sure that all files are synced to server before disabling.
