File sharing and Virtualization on one machine
Thank you for such a quick response.
Your right this would effectively consolidate everything into one box which is dangerous since it is a single point of failure. However, I am planning on configuring a local backup of everything on my Server to a DroboFS which is my current file server now.
There is nothing wrong with the DroboFS itself it is an amazing piece of hardware and I would kill for a version that is a drive bay installable into a physical machine. The only real negative with the product I have is the transfer speeds. I went
from a home brew Windows Home Server achieving an average transfer rate of 90Mb/s to the DroboFS which is only capable of 35Mb/s which is mindbogglingly slow in comparison. But it would make a good sync'ed local backup to coexist with my
online backup solutions.
My real goal in consolidating like this is to reduce the amount of hardware I currently run to help reduce on overall cost of running as well as earn myself some more room back in my home office. I guess my big concern is any type of conflict between
Hyper-V and file sharing/streaming. As well as possible conflicts from multiple Raid Cards. I have some experience with Raid and Servers but when Im buying hardware I like to cover my bases.

I’m currently running Server 2008 at my home with Hyper-v with a handful of VMs (VPN, Minecraft, FTP, etc) and am looking to maximize the potential of my server. The Host
itself is running an AMD 1090T processor with 16Gb of ram with two 1Tb hard drives in Hardware Raid 1 on a 3Ware Raid Controller. I installed two 4 Bay Hard Drive hot swap bays a while back for convenience and easy access to drives in the
event of a failure.
At the moment I am only using 2 of the available 8 bays and was looking into purchasing another 3Ware Raid card to run a separate Raid5 array and store my local Pc Backups,
pictures, movies, and other data on this new Raid Array. I’m currently using a Drobo FS for general file storage but with the amount of data i am moving around my network the Drobo is slowly reaching its maximum potential. Would there
be any issues to running both general file serving and Hyper-V at the same time on the same Machine? I know most would say try it and find out but I want to find out first before dropping $300+ on another Raid card.
I do plan on running the Drobo FS as a local backup of the Raid5 within my Server2008 machine in the event of complete Raid failure just in case.

Hello,
the major problem is if the hardware fails if you use only one machine. So maybe think about a second server with own disk space or use a SAN and connect to servers to it. this of course depends on the money you can spend. But there are also some cheaper
solutions available.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
