File extensions are unable to be hidden

Hi everyone,

I am trying to hide file extensions for a user that Is on a laptop connected to a Windows 2008 R2 server, on the laptop In the control panel under folder options the 'Hide extensions for known file types' has been checked. However when trying to save a file using save as the file extension Is still shown In the save as dialog box.

Is It possible that there Is something on the server that Is forcing the file extension to stay unhidden?

Thanks In advance!

Hi,

"Shown in the save as dialog box". Do you mean the one beside "File name" or "Save as type"?

Both seems by design and it will not be affected with or without show file extension.

But in typing a file name you can delete .txt and it will still be saved as a txt file.

Hi,

Sorry, I mean the file extension shown beside the file name. I have tested this on my personal PC outside of the network that when "hide known file extensions" Is ticked, the file extension next to the file name Is not shown.

The user wants the file extension hidden because he has to create multiple copies of a speradsheet for different versions of Excel, so when the save as type Is changed It shows the file extension for the version It was just changed to but once the extension Is deleted It defaults back to latest version.

Any Ideas what Is causing the extension to stay unhidden?

Hi,

Above all, please make sure that it is the same when the user check or uncheck the ooption - I mean even with hiding extensions, we can still create a file named file.xls - when we show extensions, it becomes to file.xls.xlsx. Sometimes we will just consider the extension is there but actually it is a part of file name added when we create the file manually.

Also make sure that all files including TXT, EXE files are showing extensions but not only Excel files.

If it is true that it will not work, check if the value below is changed to 1 when we choose Hide.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

HideFileExt

0 Means show extensions and 1 means hide extensions.

Hide FileExt will not allow me to enter a 1 to hide the file extensions.

I receive the following error: Cannot edit HidefileExt: error writing the value's new content.
