File copy problem in 2008 sp2
I get Destination Folder Access Denied message when I try to copy a file from a non-domain xp professional sp2 machine to any directory on a domain member server running 2008 enterprise sp2. I am logged on at the server as the domain administrator and have mapped the drive to the non-domain client using that client's local administrator account. I can open the file (at the server) using notepad but any attempt to place a copy of the file on the server results in a message titled 'Destination Folder Access Denied' with content 'You need permission to perform this action' and Try Again and Cancel buttons. The 2008 server is a member of a domain running in 2003 functional level with no 2008 domain controllers. Can anyone suggest a reason/solution for this? Many ThanksJohn McAlinden

Hi John, This error may be caused by incorrect permission settings. Please add/configure the following Share permission on server: 1. Give Everyone Full Control Share Permission. 2. If it doesnt work, give ANONYMOUS LOGON Write Permission or Full Control Permission. 3. If the error persists, give Everyone Write NTFS Permission or Full Control Permission. 4. Give ANONYMOUS LOGON Write NTFS Permission or Full Control Permission. Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

hi john,i have tested the similar behavior by copying the file from a non-domain client to windwos 2008 dc without error.as mervyn said there might be an issue with the permission. as a test can you try accessing windwos 2008 server using \\ipaddress\c$ or \\ipaddress\d$ and try pasting the file / copying the file onto the drive ?sainath

Thanks for the reply Mervyn.I'm logged on at the server as Administrator. The copy is being attempted at the server so share permissions are irrelevant. This may help:The client c$ share is mapped to z for the logon at the server using a client local administrator account.Doing this (at the server logon session) works and proves the permissions are not the problem:notepad Z:\DP4\500\TMP\6699011\09-07-09.stf opens the file. ALT-F4 and Save the file on the logged on user's desktop. File is written to the desktop.Doing these (at the server logon session) doesn't work andare the crux of the problem:xcopy Z:\DP4\500\TMP\6699011\09-07-09.stf c:\users\administrator\desktop\ - fails with Access Denied message. In windows explorer, right click Z:\DP4\500\TMP\6699011\09-07-09.stf, select copy. Right click on the logged on user's desktop, select paste and the'Destination Folder Access Denied'message is displayed.I can copy any files I create on the client from the server session back to the server but any exisiting client file fails.

Thanks for the reply Sainath. I think you may have tested the reverse scenario. The logon is at the server and the client is the mapped drive. See my response to Mervyn above for more info.

Hi John, I have tested copying file from XP to Server 2008 after mapping the share folder and this issue doesnt occur. If UAC is enabled on Windows Server 2008, try to disable and test. Please check if the error appears on other XP client. Also, please help to collect the following information for research. 1. Is the Simple file sharing disabled? If not, please disable it and configure Share and NTFS Permission. 2. Which credential did you input when accessing XP client? If its not XP Local Admin, please try to test with change to XP local admin account. 3. If the issue persists, lets capture the whole process: Process Monitor v2.04 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx 1. Download Process Monitor and start it. 2. Click File menu, make sure Capture Events is checked, try to reproduce this error. 3. When the error occurs, click File menu, uncheck Capture Events, click Save, exported filtered events to Logfile.PML and upload the file and then use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give us the download address. Hi John, Thank you for update. From the log file, we can find the following events: Explorer.EXE 4204 CreateFile \\61010d1\c$\DP4\500\TMP\6944011\09-07-09.STF SUCCESS Explorer.EXE 4204 CreateFile \\61010d1\c$\DP4\500\TMP\6944011\09-07-09.STF:KAVICHS ACCESS DENIED KAVICHS relates to Kaspersky, please try to disable it on both side and test. If the issue persists, please also boot Windows XP client into Safe Mode with network to test. Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks MervynI only have AV installed on the XP client. Disabling it does not make a difference. However, booting the XP client in safe mode and disabling the XP Firewall (to allow the server to make the mapping) stops the problem occuring.I'm puzzled though as I can open theXP client file at the server and read it's contents? Also, why does the Logfile.PML show the server's explorer process try to create the file on the XP client?I've uninstalled Kaspersky from the XP client now and the issue has disappeared. I'll try Kaspersly's latest release and post the result tomorrow. Many ThanksJohn
