File Share For Branch Offices

Hi All,

We basically have 4 legacy file servers at 4 locations with Windows 2003 OS. We want to remove them off and setting up new system.

So what are the best solutions? DFS (Need a file locking feature) or NAs

What Hardware? HP Storage Server or third party?

Data is essentially users and business data, e.g word, excel, etc

I believe having around 3-4TB of usable data will be sufficient for at least 3 years. Number of users will be approx. 100 150.

.

Hi

You can migrate file share by using Robocopy.(inculing nfts permissions).

Check for robocopy;

Hi,

I assume you are looking for new hardware for replacement.

Hard disks (with RAID or Storage Space) with file server is always an option because of the price.  However we may not able to provide a best suggestion. It still depends on your requirement so you can discuss with with storage vendors.

As you mentioned DFS, currently the solution of file conflict issue is to force users to use only 1 server unless it is down. There is no build-in file locking feature as you may already know. So you will need to get a third party application.

Microsoft's SharePoint is a much more usable system to manage and share large amounts of centralized business data between sites across the internet when you have hundreds of users.  The old thinking of using something like the F drive to share files was never intended to exist across the internet and still isn't.

Given the legacy nature of what is presented it is probably simpler to just upgrade to a new server at each of the 4 sites, export/import the existing shares, backup/restore the data to the new servers and be done with it.

HI,

Thanks, But running 4 servers is very costly operation. Backup Drives/ Tapes and offsite storage etc etc..

So i need something in central location but need to replicate to DR site in case of emergency.

is anyone using HP StoreEasy 1850 Storage so buying two of these units will do the job.

HI All,

Why are we doing this?

-          Legacy file servers at 4 sites

-          There are 5 file servers on old HP hardware running Windows 2003 OS

-          Approx data storage 1.5TB all up (max)

-          Comprise of corporate, client and users data

-          4 individual tape backups at the sites

Proposed solution #1

-          Upgrade to HP StoreEasy 1850 Storage bundled with Microsoft Storage Server application

-          Come bundled with 8.4TB (7 x 1.2TB HDD), OS separately in another 2 SSD drives

-               1 Server to be deployed in  DC01

-          1 Server to be deployed in DR DC02 for DR purposes

-         -          Benefit is centralisation of data, removal of tape backups at site levels except  DC01

WhaWhat do you think?
