File Server Resource Manager Storage Reports exclude specific or hidden files

We started using Storage Reports to gain some insight on our file server usage.

We quickly found out that it is not quite useful because it includes thumbs.db files and hidden files which we have not found a solution for excluding.

Does anyone know of such a way of excluding specific files or hidden files altogether?

Thanks,

Vlad

Currently, it's not possible to exclude files from the reports.

Which kind of report(s) are you using and what is your ultimate goal - there might be other ways to accomplish them.

A simple usage is to see the number of files per user, the total occupied space and the top 100 files. The thing is, many of our users have very small files which makes only the first 10 or so files relevant, the others being thumbs.db.

Another problem is that if you want to run the report against the root of a deduped volume you incur the same behavior listing the chunks from System Volume Information.

You could use the Report By User for the high level overview of users with most data and general ratios and then use different means (PS or cmd line) to find what are the top users' big files.

Another option may be to cleanup the tumbs.db on some interval for all users.

Regarding dedup - the FSRM reports don't work well on dedup volumes since the reports were designed to report on physical size and physical size is impossible to calculate for dedup'ed files. This is something we are aware of and may fix/improve in future releases.
