Hello, download and use:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B950E3B1-3267-41C2-8F10-1FE9A4BFA44D&displaylang=enCheck the following logs:C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log for something like:Checking packages. (f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB961260_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.3.mum (f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB961260_server~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.3.mum (f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB961260~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.3.mum then copy the files from a machine where it was succeeded to isntall SP2 the missing files. This info is from a german article, really short translated:http://msmvps.com/blogs/rauscher/archive/2009/08/09/SP2Error.aspxAlso check the included links at the end.

Hi MeinolfThank you for your quick reply. Your short explanation is to short for me and I dont understand German. I think the easiest way- since MS dont release an update or tool to solve this relatively common problem -will be to demote my DC and install a new one.Best RegardsLars

Hello,i am not sure if reinstallation is your solution, it still can result in the same problem.Ok, i will try to translate more detailed the article from Dieter Rauscher MVP "http://msmvps.com/blogs/rauscher/archive/2009/08/09/SP2Error.aspx":
1. Download and run "System Update Readiness Tool for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [April 2009]":http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B950E3B1-3267-41C2-8F10-1FE9A4BFA44D&displaylang=en
2. From the created logfiles check the following log files:C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
3. In CheckSUR.log was the important hint in this case:
================================= Checking System Update Readiness. Binary Version 6.0.6001.22375 Package Version 5.0 2009-08-08 22:33
Checking Deployment Packages
Checking Package Manifests and catalogs.

Checking component store Summary: Seconds executed: 277 Found 3 errors CBS MUM Missing Total Count: 3
4. In the folder C:\windows\servicing\packages are missing 3 files from the patch KB961260:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=24d219ec-cd50-4905-8bee-dba8900de973
The files in that patch where for IE7 on W2K8 SP2 and not for SP1. So a manual install is not possible.
5. You need a W2K8 with succesful install of SP2and can copy from that one the missing files to the W2K8 SP1 machine. By default also Administrators are not allowed, so you have to take ownership from the \servicing\* folder structure and assign at least write permissions to the Administrator account you use.
6. Now try again to install SP2 and keep in mind that this can be still some other files. This ones are just from the server mentioned in the original posting.
!!!SO IF THIS SERVER IS AN IMPORTANT SERVER, DO NOT FORGET TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE!!!

Hi MeinolfThank you again for your reply. The problem turned out to be much more complicated... Tried to dcpromo the dc but the server could not complete the task - reason: "Failed to detect if Active Directory Domain Services binaries were installed. The error was: No signature was present in the subject."This server is my primary dc and dns. I thinkI succesfully seized and transferred FSMO roles to the secondary dc with ntdsutil- I am following up on that "as we speak". If this was a success I will like to remove the old dc1, butI have to figureout how to do that completely (remove all traces...)My case in a nutshell: I have a faulty 2008 primary domain controller and a need my dc2 to take over and delete dc1. Do you now of any good description about that?Best RegardsLars
