FSMO roles
Hi I have just started at a new company and I am trying to uncover our setup. We have 3 DC's and the FSMO roles is divided like this: Domain01 = RID and PDF Domain02 = Schema and Infrastructure Domain03 = Domain Naming Are there any advantages with the above setup?/Lasse

Hello, not really, in case of a crash the FSMO roles must not all be seized, that's it. In a multi domain forest you have to take care about the IM and Global catalog placement, see here about details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223346/en-usBest regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

If you only have 3 DCs it would be perfectly acceptable to have all roles on a single DC. However, spreading them over multiple DCs is more forgiving in the event of a crash. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223346 I hope this information is useful.

What version of the AD and how many domains? In a single domain forest, it won’t make any differences. Here the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223346/en-us article thoroughly. Single domain forest: In a forest that contains a single Active Directory domain, there are no phantoms, and so the infrastructure master has no work to do. The infrastructure master may be placed on any domain controller in the domain, regardless of whether that domain controller hosts the global catalog or not. Multidomain forest where every domain controller in a domain holds the global catalog: If every domain controller in a domain that is part of a multidomain forest also hosts the global catalog, there are no phantoms or work for the infrastructure master to do. The infrastructure master may be put on any domain controller in that domain.
