Extremely weird file share issue

We are having a very weird issue when trying to access file shares from a remote site. If we use the UNC path (\\servername\sharename\folder) we never have the problem.   Also, if we go to the drive letter and click through the folders, we don't experience the problem.

The problem only arises when pasting the absolute path into windows explorer (ex. L:\foldername\foldername). Once we do that, it hangs for a second and then sends you back to the initial share, and the path in explorer shows <drive letter>\.\.\ (ex. L:\.\.)

As the jpg attached shows. For security rules,  I had to block the share name /server name

I have never seen an issue like this. It only happens from 2 remote offices. Other remote offices are fine

Hi,

Do you mean that you accessed the file share locally by pasting the absolute path into windows explorer (ex. L:\foldername\foldername) then always access the root folder and you can access the file share from remote site without issue?

Please share the exact steps or give a detailed example to help us reproduce the same behavior.

Best Regards,

Mandy

What I mean is, say my data center is in Chicago, and that's where my file server is, and I'm in California. On my laptop (in California), I have the share mapped to my L: drive.

If I were to paste the absolute path to a folder in windows explorer, what you see is in the screen shot is what happens. Let's pretend the L: drive is mapped to \\server1\accounting.  If I paste a link in windows explorer to L:\FY15\Docs, it will automatically direct me back to the root of the L drive. However, if I paste the UNC path \\server1\accounting\FY15\Docs, it works fine every time.

This is only happening from 1 remote office. Locally, and other remote offices accessing the files are fine

Hi,

Is the file share a DFS share? If so, the symptoms are similar with the article below mentioned. You could install the hotfix it the article to resolve the issue

You cannot access a DFS share through a mapped network drive on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
