Event logs, errors...Event ID's 257 & 491 updates not installing
I am having multiple errors when attempting to install updates, there may be other problems. My backups had failed and after bouncing the server they seem ok, however I was still unable to install updates on this box which are no different than several other 08 r2 servers I have running. Anyone have an idea??? Thanks The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The ESENT error was: -1032. Catalog Database (1160) Catalog Database: An attempt to determine the minimum I/O block size for the volume "C:\" containing "C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot2\" failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. Repair the catalog database by using Esentutl To repair the catalog database by using Esentutl: 1.Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Accessories. 2.Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. 3.If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue. 4.In the command prompt window, type net stop cryptsvc to stop Cryptographic Services, and then press ENTER. 5.Type esentutl /p <%systemroot%>\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb, and then press ENTER. The above cmd produces the error "Access is Denied" why would this be? I am working as the domain Admin and a member of the local admin group which seems to have the rights to C:\

For the "Access is Denied", are you sure you have used Run as an administrator option? For the Windows Update issues, Download and install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 2008 R2 and check if all is okay or not. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/ Download and run the tool, it will say that it's "installing"...it's actually running the readiness scan at this time so you should let the installation run to completion. The KB article says it will appear to hang at 60% completion and I've observed this as well. Just be patient and let it finish. After the "installation" is completed, Let us know the results. If this does not solve your problem, please reset windows update components: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 If you have a question related to Windows Update, please post your question in the dedicated Windows Update Forum. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Thank you for your cooperation! Are you sure you have used Run as an administrator option? YES I did a run as and the cmd prompt opened up to the domain Admin account of the logged in Domain Admin. The setup on this is NO different than any of the other R2 boxes, this one has an issue the others don't. I'm trying the readiness tool and will see if that helps! Thanks

For the Windows Update issues, Download and install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 2008 R2 and check if all is okay or not. Tried to run updates after the update ran and no info, same errors. If this does not solve your problem, please reset windows update components: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 This update is only applicable to Vista, it will not run on R2 If you have a question related to Windows Update, please post your question in the dedicated Windows Update Forum. I posted info here as it seems to be a security issue due to the errors posted. I considered posting in WSUS and felt the General forum may be better. If the Esentutl permissions were fixed it may also fix the updates.

Hy cjindell Im have de sam problem on W2k8 R2, on 2 Servers ... you have news on thys problem? Thanks I've found the solution to my problem and think it's the same with you. This is the WSUS or permission to the WSUS that writes updates. And you've got the local users <server\Users> entitle the c:\root Add the local user (server\users) on the root (c:\) in register security. Permissions change anything. After you confirm the added user, the NTFS is inherited permission (various access denied appear, click OK). Go server\users - Advances Secutity Settings - see permissions - ad server\users - Apply to: This folders and files Allow: Traverse folder / execute file List folder / read data Read extendes attributes Read permissions AD server\users - Apply to: This folders and subfolders Allow: create folders / append data AD server\users - Apply to: Subfolders only Allow: create files / write data Why it was created is because it has a GPO W2k3 and these other NTFS sets permissions Sorry for my English is not so good
