Error message when stopping System Event Notification service...
Hi all;
When I want to stop System Event Notification service, the following error message appears:
Windows Could not stop the System Event Notification Service service on Local Computer.
Error 997: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
Although the service stops successfully, but anyone have an idea about the error message?
Thanks

Hi,
I suggest testing the issue in the Clean Boot state:
1. Click the Start Button, type "msconfig" in the search bar and press Enter.
Note: Please click the Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System"
4. Test if this error occurs in Clean Boot.
Note 1: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually
run these programs later.
Note 2: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.
If the issue persists, please Click Start, click Run, type cmd and press Enter. Type in “sfc /scannow” (without quotation marks) and press
Enter.
If the issue still occurs, please check whether there is any related error in Event Viewer.

Thanks for your reply;
I tested in Clean Boot state as you you suggested with the same result. I have seen this issue in several physical and virtual systems. I have this issue with a freshly installed Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with latest updates. I do not have any security
software on my virtual test case.
When this issue occurs, the following error event is appeared in Event Viewer:
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7023
The System Event Notification Service service terminated with the following error:
Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
The system event notification service is used to monitor system events and notify the subscribers. The error message should indicate some action is still running but actually the service can be stopped successfully later. I can easily reproduce the symptom
in my test machines.
To confirm the service has stopped successfully, you can run this command "tasklist /svc" and no svchost.exe hosts the SENS service.
Thanks,

So you think this my be a bug?
Thanks

I have checked our bug database and do not see any report about this. It can be a by-design case. When Service Control Manager (SCM) receives the 'stop' request, it reports the error message if it detects some IO about the SENS service is still in progress,
but later it can successfully stop the service after the IO completion.
Considering on it getting successful in the end, so I think our development team will not accept it if submitting a change request.
May you let me know if it is ok to live with it? Thanks.

Bowen
