According to the error message, it seems that you got an error when you update package KB970430.

Most likely, this issue is caused by the KB970430 package file missing in your servicing\packages\folders.

To resolve this issue, you may need to install the KB970430 update to other machine (same OS version and Service level as the problematic computer).

Then copy the following missing files into the problematic machine folder(%systermroot%\servicing\packages\).

I got an error 80070020 now when i want to update. I think it has to do with permissions, but i'm not actually confident where i should change them to.

What i did:

1. Copy necessary files from another server to the server with the update error
- Error about permissions popped up, but:
2. In command prompt:
    - cd c:\windows\servicing
    - takeown /f Packages /r /d y
    - yicacls directory_name /grant administrators:F /t
3. Copy all files to the servicing directory without any errors

(2) This will change the ownership of all files to the Administrations-group, but the hilarious thing is that error 80070020 is now popping up, at exactly the same way as on the other machine with the topic mentioned above.

Is there a quick way to regrant the permissions?

Also, i get this error in the Event Viewer:
Windows Servicing identified that package KB970430(Security Update) is not applicable for this system

Please follow the lines and copy/paste the logfiles, so Microsoft knows which files they need to send.

According to the error code 80070020, it seems the process cannot access the update file because it is being used by another process. Please check the following KB article contains step-by-step methods that you can use to resolve this issue and successfully download Windows updates.

Meanwhile, please also verify whether the systermroot%\servicing\packages folder has "TrustedInstaller" ACL on the problemactic server.

Thanks for your reply.

No, the folder doesn't have TrustedInstaller as an owner, because it has been changed with takeown, because otherwise the files wouldn't allow me to copy it to the directory.

Is there a quick way to change the ownership to TrustedInstaller again?

Thanks. I managed to fix the ownerships with a prompt window using icacls. The owner of all files and Packages folder is 'TrustedInstaller' again, but even after a reboot, the same error comes up when i want to update :(

In the Event Log file, i can find this:

Windows Servicing identified that package KB970430(Security Update) is not applicable for this system

And in the Update History i see lines with 'Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB970430)', which are failed. This is really weird, cause it's a Windows 2008 system.

After you perform above troubleshooting steps, please follow the steps below:

1. Delete the KB970430 package contents from the systermroot%\servicing\packages folder on your system.

2. Run Windows Update and allow KB970430 to install.

I am just your average computer user - reading this thread it is clear that I have to be an IT technician to have a hope of getting this issue resolved
I have the same error code. I feel as though I'm wasting weeks of my life trying to resolve it, and the fact that it can't be resolved leaves my computer and my security vulnerable.

The answer? I have to pay Microsoft all over again for an operating system that works. I think this stinks!
