Try this from known that this if for Vista but yur problem if very similar like the OS.I recommend not to delete the file but only rename it After a long search, some good inputs, here finally a procedure that worked for me: All credits to CogitoErgoSum on forums, hereunder his procedure with a slight modification: I assume MS will deliver a patch sooner or later for this issue... however, I fixed it with the help of MS Support. DISCLAIMER: This solution fixed the problem for me, I cannot guarantee it will fix it for anybody else! Moreover, renaming system files might corrupt your system!!! The issue is that the WUA 3.0 (7.0.6000.374) upgrade is corrupted, essentially the system reports the WUA to be 7.0.6000.374 but the files on the disk are still from the old version (you can check some of the DLLs like wups.dll, wuaueng.dll etc... in the windows\system32) ... and you cannot install the WUA 3.0 even manually. delete the following file: C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml Since Windows security will not allow you to do this, hereunder the procedure to take ownership of the file: run a command prompt with "Run as Administrator". Type in the following commands: takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G <YourUsername>:F then delete the file Reboot the machine, then manually install the WUA 3.0 downloadable from here: This should fix the Error 80073712 when the other solutions do not work. BE AWARE that renaming C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml might have unrecoverable impacts on your Vista installation Another thing that i've done already was to copy missing files from working Windows 2008 server .In the LOG file from System Update Readiness tools are the missing part Yea,Server OS with User problems :) Thats why we have R2

Hello Martin,After deleting the pending.xml, the next step is to back up any data, then rebuild the machine. The OS is in an inconsistent state, whatever updates were in the process of installing did not complete, so you haveany number of partially installed updates, that have transactions that have not taken place. This can affect security of your system. This can affect future servicing of any components of those updates which would include the next service pack. This could affect the ability to service the system altogether.Deleting the pending.xml is used for recovery to allow for data recovery, after deleting it a system really needs to be rebuilt, the stability of that OS is in question. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hello SalvaCar,Actually your issue has nothing to do with pending.xml.You have missing\corrupted files that need to be replaced on your system. What is in the checksur.log file? ( Located in the \Windows\logs\cbs\checksur.log)The list of missing files should be in that log file. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hello SalvaCar,Can you just copy the information from the checksur.log for the last time it was run and post that in the forum. It logs the date when it runs so the current log information is all that is needed, and there isn't too much in the checksur log in most cases. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hi, From the log, there are quite a lot of files missing or corrupt on your system. I am afraid that you may need to perform an in-place upgrade or reinstall the system. Tim Quan - MSFT
