ERROR: The cabinet file 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used

As the title indicates, I'm having this error during installation. It occurs when I try to install
the "Management Studio" part of the program. I've tried a bunch of things like
copying to hard drive and installing, but to no avail. To isolate the problem, i've even tried removing Reporting services, since at the time of failure it seems to be trying to install/configure the Microsoft.Reporting Services dll.

Additionally, I have SQL Express installed (installed it separately, not as part of the SQL 2005 DVD), VS 2005, .NET Framework 2.0, SQL Management Studio Express CTP. Could the Management Studio Express be causing a problem?

Please note:
Although the error is about missing / corrupt Sql.cab, I have searched the entire dvd for the said file, but there is no file called Sql.cab on the dvd. Am I missing something?

Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

We don't support Management Studio Express and Management Studio side by side on the same box. Remove Management Studio Express and I bet you'll be OK.

Alternate theory, if that doesn't work: possibly your media is corrupt, as the error message says.

Same Problem on the Sql2005 32bit developer cd. It trys to find dtserver.exe off of the sql.cab file and its not found. This is on an installed sql 2005 server, that is sp1 when I go back and try to install the integration services.

The exact error message I get when trying to install the services are:

Integration services install
Product version 9.00.1399.06

The File 'msdtssrvr.exe. cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in cabinet file 'sql.cab'. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the cd-rom, or a problem with this package.
error 1334

When I try to install reporting services
Product version 9.00.1399.06

The cabinet file 'sql.cab; required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the cd-rom, or a problem with this package.
error 1335

Does anyone have suggestions? The only other point of interest is that this sql server is running on a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. The OS running is Windows 2003R2 enterprise sp1.

I've also gone back and tried to install after copying the cd to the virtual server.

May 9th, 2006 3:51pm

Resolved!...

I decided to try a command line install of the components i wanted to add..

start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

That did not apparently help me, so I started searching the install cd for other options...

I ended up going to the install disc into the setup folder and running SqlRun_DTS.msi. It generated one error, apparently not fatal, continuedand then allowed me to install the integration services off of the CD.

I've also reapplied the Sql2005 SP1 since I can't even run an csv file import without it ;)

Hope this helps others.

That sounds encouraging. I'll give it a spin and post back with my results. If someone else tries it please post back too.

Update:
Hmm still no juice. I tried to run the SqlRun_Tools.msi (that's where the problem was) and this is what I'm now getting...

"A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."

I have absolutely no idea where or what template.ini is. I have also removed all SQL Express items (i.e. SQL Express Management Studio, SQL Express Books Online, SQL Express - the server).

I ended up installing those components from the Enterprise edition cd (the developer edition was throwing the error in my case).

The components were corrupted on my Developer edition dvd. I installed them from the Enterprise Edition DVD. Just insert a different cd when doing the install and choosing that for the other components.

Hi people,

I havebeen having this problem and I believe thisissue stems fromthe factthat we are all trying to install from either a virtual CD/DVD loaded from an ISO image or a CD/DVD drive shared across the network or the CD/DVD contents have been copied to a directory on the server itself.

The solution?

The only way I have gotten a trouble free installation of SQL 2005 is to do it from a CD/DVD drive directly connected to the server on which you want to have SQL installed to.

I am surprised that it is not possible to install SQL from a virtual CD drive with an ISO file, some of our servers have a temporary CD/DVD drive attached when making the base OS install which is then removed when fitting into the rack.

Can't believe this behaviour is by design.

Anyhow thought I would share my experiences with SQL installations thus far, hopefully it will help someone.

I am having the same problem installing SQL Server 2005 Standard on a clean Windows 2003 server.
First I downloaded the following files from the eOpen site:
  • SW_CD_SQL_Svr_Standard_Edtn_2005_W32_Spanish_1_32_bit_MLF_X11-57646.EXE (371MB)
  • SW_CD_SQL_Svr_Standard_Edtn_2005_W32_Spanish_2_32_bit_MLF_X11-57647.EXE (555MB)
  • SW_CD_NTRL_SQL_Svr_2005SP2_W32_Spanish_1_X13-36436.EXE (297MB)
  • SW_DVD5_NTRL_MSDN_Library_2005_W32_Spanish_1_SQL_VS_X11-66782.ISO (1622MB)
  • SW_CD_NTRL_SQL_Svr_Standard_Edtn_2000SP4_Spanish_1_X11-22875.EXE (206MB)
Uncompressed the first two files on a shared directory on another computer (with no error uncompressing), tried to install SQLserver from there and got the error message while copying msmdsrv.dll.
Searched for 'sql.cab' in the uncompressed directories and did not found it.
Tried copying the files to a local directory on the server, same result.
Tried burning the files to two CDs, same result.
Downloaded the first two files again an repeat, same result.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Anyone find a solution to this? I've tried several options for installing SQL Server 2005 on my Vista Ultimate SP1 machine. Cannot get past the Sql.cab corruption error.

I tried to use an old AMD motherboard M2V-MX-SE as a test Win 2003 server with MS SQLserver2005 ++.

This old AMD motherboard did not have Win 2003 drivers for LAN, VGA, Chipset etc, so I had to use XP 32 drivers.

Then I got this ERROR. ( and some others to).

The "funny" thing was that OFFICE 2003, Biztalk Serverinstalled without any problems!

There must be some "spesial algorimes" inside SQL server 2003 installation program,

because when I used INTEL ASUS P5E-VM HDMI motherboard - everything installed nicely!

(I didn't reinstall Win 2003 - just the INTEL drivers.)

So if you are using a AMD motherboard try one from INTEL.

Ok, I had the same problem trying to get past the file cannot be found in cabinet file 'sql.cab' i had big problems with this. I tried downloading the Windows install cleaner and ccleaner and nothing seemed to work. What eventually worked was 1. try to install at least something to do with Microsoft SQL 2005,for example, install SQL Express 2005 or Microsoft SQL 2005 DTS. This will add to your 'add/Remove programs' an entry 'Microsoft SQL 2005'. Go to 'Add/Remove programs', highlight this entry, and click on 'change', then point to your Setup.exe on your installation disk and the rest should be easy. I did not get the error after that and in fact i demonstrated that this solution did not just work for one computer but a second one having the same exact problem.

Thanks,

This is really a big big problem for me..I've been trying to install MS Sql Server since 2 weeks and still got stuck. I don't know why they make the installation so painful. Hope to solve it sooner though. Will be posting the solution if i find it.

Reading though the many Google hits going way back AD-2000/AD-2006/AD-2011/AD-2014 for various installs including SQLserver_2008/2012 etc
I noted that in the main there were x2 common themes.

1. Problem with corruption the original download.
--- Although I had not run the download checksum
--- I had previously just installed SQLServer2014_Developer successfully, so at the minute, I was confident downloads were ok.
--- Many hits mentioned this 'Sql.cab' file and 90% of the install had been successfull -
--- I figured the chances of us all having corruption of this one files were agaianst the odds and
---   probably re-downloading it would not fix this - but I kicked a re-download off anyhow .

While it was running ...

2. Network issue when installing - some of the hits asked if could be related to Virtual drives.
--- This struck a chord
--- I had downloaded the SQLServer2014 .iso to my host PC and then copied it onto one OneDrive so I could access it within the VirtualBox_Windows_10.
--- From within the VirtualBox_Windows_10 I had then used SetupVirtualCloneDrive5450.exe to mount the OneDrive SQLServer2014 .iso and then autorun the install.

What worked for me ...

--- I decided to
--- 1. Copy the same SQLServer2014 .iso that had failed to install x2 from OneDrive to the c:\ root of the VirtualBox_Windows_10.
--- 2. Remount the same SQLServer2014 .iso from c:\ again using SetupVirtualCloneDrive5450.exe.
--- 3. Re-run the SQLServer2014 install using the repair mode.

This time the [Maintenance] [Repair] install completed with all elements showing installed successfully.

I have been fighting with this issue all day.. This is ABSURD.  No antivirus, no meaningful errors.  Downloaded multiple different editions of SQL 2014 and all have this SQL.CAB file error.  So frustrating, no good Google searches that come back with any meaningful help.

Always its safe to install sql server from the local disk. Extract the ISO images and place it on local harddisk and install with admin rights.
