Recently one of our user's EFS certificate expired. It was automatically renewed through autoenrollment, however this user was unable to access the files that she encrypted with her old certificate. If you have autoenrollemnt set to auto renew certificates shouldn't users still be able to access encrypted files.

They must still keep the old certificate and private key in their user store.The certificate will be switched to an archived status but must still be there.My guess is that her profile was deleted or something else that deleted the old certificate and private keyBrian
