Downgrade SQL 2014 STD to SQL 2008 STD procedure

Hi Team,

Hope you all are doing good.

I need to downgrade my SQL 2014 SQL Std to SQL 2008 Std, want to know is it possible? if yes then it would be good if you guide for the same.

I am doing fresh installation so there is no current data which i want to take backup but i have procured below product from microsoft and my application requirement is to use SQL 2008 Std. If you guide me how to downgrade Sql 2014 to sql 2008 licensed version then it would very useful to me.

Just want to ask is we have procured one Line item "MicrosoftSQLServerStandardEdition 2014 Sngl OLP 1License NoLevel" and by using license and authorisation number i have downloaded SQL 2014 ISO and while installing it didn't ask me any license key, etc. Why this is so and because of that do we have any problem to downgrade SQL 2014 to SQL 2008?

Procured licenses as follow

228-10344

SQLSvrStd 2014 SNGL OLP NL

359-06098

SQLCAL 2014 SNGL OLP NL UsrCAL

7NQ-00563

SQLSvrStdCore 2014 SNGL OLP 2Lic NL CoreLic Qlfd

7JQ-00751

SQLSvrEntCore 2014 SNGL OLP 2Lic NL CoreLic Qlfd

D2M-00667

SQLSvrBsnssIntelligence 2014 SNGL OLP NL Qlfd

Your reply will be appreciated.

Thanks,

This can be so frustrating! I think it's good to avoid this decision. Some problems are:

  1. Database backup do not support restore on older version
  2. Attach & Detach do not work
  3. New features and commands like THROW do not work on older version
  4. Discontinued SQL Server Features in SQL Server 2012
  5. Discontinued SQL Server Features in SQL Server 2014

As this is a new installation, just uninstall SQL 2014 and install SQL 2008.

Call microsoft licensing support and get clarification that you can use the same license for downgraded versions.

Call (1-800-426-9400), Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST to speak directly to Microsoft licensing specialist.

Hello,

You wont be able to install SQL Server 2008 from SQL Server 2014 media. You already bought the SQL Server 2014 license that allows you to install an early version of SQL Server instead of installing SQL 2014, but you need to acquire the SQL Server 2008 media too to be able to install a SQL Server 2008 instance.

Hope this helps.

I think there's some procedure to get downgrade media through the sales channel.  But you can also just use the MSDN bits.

With regards to MSDN Bit when we use Manage MSDN Sybscription option under license details in our portal we are getting below error.

"No MSDN Benefits were found for Open License xxxxxxxx".

For the above said issue we have initiated call to microsoft licensing team they suggested to use any SQL 2008 STD Media and their corresponding Key's to activate the product.

We have SQL Server 2008 STD media which we used to install fresh 2008 SQL Std edition with evaluation version(180 day). however when tried to activate the product using product key we are getting error stating Invalid product key. We have below information with us.

1) License Number
2) Agreement Information
3) Authorization Number

Please suggest step wise procedure to activate evaluation version to  licensed MS 2008 SQL STD.

Thanks,

Vishal
