Dot Net Framework 3.5 SP1 does not install on Virtual PC with OS Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum
I am running a Microsoft Virtual PC with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It also has MS Office 2010 installed and I was hoping to install Excel 2010 Power Pivot. A prerequisit for this is Dot Net Framework 3.5 SP1 which I downloaded from the
MS portal. however it fails to install. I have copied in the error further down.
Any ideas ?
Bye,
Gunther

Hi,
First I would like to confirm whether your virtual server runs Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
If you are running Windows Server 2008 R2, you do not need to install .Net Framework 3.5 as it is a built-in component in Windows Server 2008 R2.
If you are running Windows Server 2008, please try the following method to install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1:
Step 1: Remove .NET Framework using removal tool
================================
1. Please download the tool from the following link:
http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.
2. Please save the zip file (dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) from the above link to the local Desktop and extract it.
3. Double click cleanup_tool.exe to run the tool.
4. Please follow the instructions given.
In the "Product to cleanup:" box, please select ".NET Framework - All versions".
5. Click "Cleanup Now" button.
After removing .NET Framework components, let's reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and its update.
Step 2: Manually downloading and installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
=======================================================
Please note: The size of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a little big. Your patience to download the update is
much appreciated.
1. Click the following link:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7
2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it on the Desktop. After downloading the Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.5 setup file on your Desktop, double-click to manually install it.
If it still cannot be installed, please let me know what error message appears during the installation.

Hello Tim.
I actually have the exact same problem. I installed Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Service Pack 1 Debug (x86) (build 6001).
I've successfully installed .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 1.1 SP1.
Now I am trying to install .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 and I get the following error message:
Description:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly.

I should point out that I also tried to remove all .NET Framework installations (as described in the previous posts in this thread) using the .NET Framework clean-up tool. The clean-up process went fine.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Best regards

What confuses me most about this problem is this line here:
Problem Event Name: VisualStudio8Setup
I have never even tried to install Visual Studio to Windows Server 2008.
