Domain name for two servers
I have installed on one server Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. I have given the domain name as "test.com". I have another server on which I will install Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. I want to use this server as test so that I can transfer data between the two servers. For this server while installing Windows Server 2008 what domain name should I give. Can I give "bkptest.com"Satish Menon

Yes you can, but I think it will be easier if you add those two new servers to same AD domain - those you already installedWith kind regards Krystian Zieja http://www.projectnenvision.com Follow me on twitter My Blog

Hello, first of all, it is not recommended to install SQL on a DC. If it is just for test, I recommend that you install a DC/DNS/GC server for each domain and SQL server on a member server. Note that in productive environment, it is recommended to have at least two DC/DNS/GC servers per domain. For SQL questions, post in SQL forums. When I installed AD on the first server, I chose "New Domain on new forest". I gave the domain name "test.com". If I want to put another server on this domain, while installing AD should I choose "New Domain on Existing forest". Then what name should I give for the domain. Should it be "mo.test.com" or "mo.com"Satish Menon

Hello, installing SQL or other applications on a DC is not recommended, even not from Microsoft: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144228(v=SQL.90).aspx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229 You run into trouble if the DC must be restored and other applications are used on it, A DC should always do it's basic job, AD, DNS, GC and if not other option also DHCP, that's it. There is no problem using different domain names, keep in mind that just copy and paste between domains will not be sufficient especially if SQL databases with specific accounts are used.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Just keep in mind that if you want to configure trust relationships between both domains then: DNS name of both domains should be different NetBIOS name of both domains should be different SID of both domains should be different This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. If I want to add the second server to the same domain as first server , then which option should I choose when I am installing AD in the second server. Should I choose "New domain in existing forest".Satish Menon

If you just want to add a server to the same domain, you don't install AD on the second server, you just join it to the domain. If you want to add a second Domain controller, then it's something like "add a DC to an existing domain".

I think that you are speaking about member servers. In this case, you don't need to install AD on them as you only need to join them to the domain.
