Domain changed and need to migrate profile under Windows Server 2008 R2
Our company was bought by another one and they require us to migrate to the new domain and shut down the old one. Everything on my system needs to stay the same. As documented by many others, the "Copy To" function has been disabled under Windows Server 2008 R2 user profile management. What is best way to preserve all settings and make this a simple transition?

Hello WSPMark, Are these user roaming profiles? If so, you can copy roaming user profiles to new server by using FSMT. Great stuff and thanks for replying. The profiles are not roaming ones, so I need to use the local profile migration instructions. However, the referenced article Translating Local User Profiles http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773340(WS.10).aspx does not say that it applies to 2008 R2. Does it? Thanks, Mark

Thanks. I ran the tool and selected the "Security Translation Wizard". For security, I'm using only pneumonic names in the following sentences. On the Domain Selection step, I entered OLDDOMAINNAME for source domain and the domain controller read "<Any domain controller>". I then entered NEWDOMAINNAME for target domain and again had "<Any domain controller>" for the domain controller. Upon hitting Next, I got Error box that reads "The Windows NT4 domain 'OLDDOMAINNAME' is not supported. What did I do wrong?

Thanks again. The server is Windows Server 2008 R2 and I'm trying to do security translation wizard from OLDDOMAINNAME\username to NEWDOMAINNAME\username. So I am using the Active Directory Migration Tool version 3.2. I run the tool and select the "Security Translation Wizard". Regardless of domain name I use, I get message back upon hitting Next button that reads "The Windows NT4 domain 'ANYDOMAINNAME' is not supported. Now I am doing this as the Adminstrator of the box and am not logged into either domain. Is this okay? What else might I look at?

Additional information. I just tried to run ADMT Security Translation Wizard from within domain login (NEWDOMAINNAME\username). Now domain controller names display as expected whereas before, only the text "<Any domain controller>" showed in the drop-down list. But now i'm getting a different message that reads "Security translation will not be performed as no user, group, or managed service account was previously migrated from the domain 'OLDDOMAINNAME' to the domain 'NEWDOMAINNAME'. OLDDOMAIN\username1 and NEWDOMAINNAME\username1 do exist and the account was migrated. The old one was left intact due to other needs. Any advice?

Hello Mark, I can reproduce this issue on my side. However, when I migrated these objects to new target by using User Account Migration Wizard. The error was disappeared. What operation system is DC running in the source/target domain? Both domains are Windows Server 2003. Could the problem be because the NEWDOMAIN\username already exists on the computer where I'm trying to migrate the files from OLDDOMAIN\username?

I thought I replied to this already, but since I don't see my reply, it must not have gone through. I do not have any migration*.log files. There are only two of log files and they have to do with the install process (and they say installation was successful). We do not need to persue this further because I'm just working around the situation, but I would be curious to know how to do this for future reference. I leave it up to you.
