Does SSS Buffer Pool Extension still makes sense if database is already on SSD?
If your entire SQL Server database is on SSD already does having a buffer pool extension on SSD still give any additional benefit?

No. the sole case for BPE is when the BPE storage is significantly faster the where the mdf and ndf are.

It's looking a bit like this buffer pool extension was added in anticipation of new kinds of memory becoming available over the next year or two, XPoint memory from Intel configured as System Class Memory (SCM), slower than regular DRAM but faster than flash/SSD memory.

... and even then there will be some question as to whether it makes sense, if the main database is in SSD, or the new kinds of flash storage that may also reside directly on the memory bus.
