I know that in SQL Server 2012 the drive containing the FileTable folder must on a local drive of the database server. Is this restriction still applicable to SQL Server 2014 and SQL Server 2016?
Does FileTable still need to be on a drive local to the database server?

Hi Ken,
This restriction is still applicable to SQL Server 2014 and SQL Server 2016. The FileTable folder should be on a Storage Area Network (SAN) or locally attached disk.
You can review the following article to understand why we should not use network shared for database files.
Description of support for network database files in SQL Server
