Display problem when logging onto Win 2008 Server, can only log on trough Remote Desktop
I have problems with a Win 2008 Server (32-bit). It is not possible to log on using the attached display/keyboard. When I press Ctrl-Alt-Del to log on or switch user, the screen turns partially blank. The different User account names are shown in text, but the icons are missing. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del again makes it return to th "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Switch User" screen. The server otherwise works normally. It is possible to log on from another server using Remote Desktop.

Hi, Please backup the registry and perform the following steps. 1. Type regedit in start search box, press Enter. 2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]. 3. You will probably want to right-click on “ProfileList” and click export to save the entire subtree in case something goes wrong. 4. You will find several subfolders or “keys” named something like “S-1-x-xx…”, open them one at the time. 5. Each should contain at least the three value-sets, “Flags”, “ProfileImagePath” and “State”, some will contain more. 1) Look at the end of ProfileImagePath for the name of the user represented by the key. 2) You will usually have one for each user on the system, and one for each of the three system entries ‘systemprofile’, ‘LocalService’ and ‘NetworkService’. 6. Delete any key (i.e. the whole “S-1-x-xx” folder) that does not contain at least those three values. 7. Reboot to check the result. If it cannot fix the issue, please also run System File Checker to scan and repair the system files. For the deteailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 If it does not work, please try to perform a Safe Mode and a Clean Boot to test the issue. For the detailed steps of how to enter into Clean Boot, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 What’s the result in Safe Mode and Clean Boot?
